Is anybody else familiar with Simplex Chat? I just started checking it out a couple days ago and it seems like a neat little messenger. It reminds me of a kind of middle ground between Signal and Briar.

I just installed SimpleX. Very nice from a user POV. Less bloated than Element, which is what I use day-to-day.
However, I want to see if I can switch away from the default servers. obviously, it’s not a privacy issue, but what is the point of decentralization if everyone uses the default servers.

@cquenelle Maybe that's the way it works from the server's POV, I haven't looked too closely into those details yet. From the perspective of using the Android app, it's just pick a display name and share an invite link or QR code with the person you want to talk to which establishes a two way chat.
@satch Yeah that's always the struggle with these kinds of messengers. It's not perfect but I think Signal strikes the best balance of all the ones I've tried. I will say though that Simplex's Android app is surprisingly easy to setup and use considering how it works.
From the white paper, It was hard for me grok the high level flow between two users. Is it like: (?) I connect to a server and tell it to make me an unnamed queue and please send me a key pair. I send the public key and server address to my friend. They can use that to send me items, but not receive. Is that the basic idea? I don’t see the benefit to making it a one-way connection.
I just checked it out
Interesting for theory reasons, but I think privacy and simplicity are too much at odds here.
