Having recently finished the first season of True Detective, which I very much enjoyed, I searched the show on Gemini. Rather than finding anything about the show however, I stumbled upon a My Little Pony fanfiction about a detective.
Using good judgement, I decided not to read it, but it strikes me as telling as to exactly what Gemini is.
Gemini is an alternative to the internet and other social media sites, a sort of blog-based web browser. But it being an alternative to larger, more mainstream tools, means that it will have only a niche audience. And like all technological alternatives, particularly social media, a niche alternative attracts oddballs and people who were kicked out of the other place.
And as such, you get things like a My Little Pony detective fancfiction and Doomsday Preppers.
Now, that's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's not exactly to my tastes. Or most people's, I imagine. Because of this dichotomy of niche tech alternatives and massive mainstream tech companies, social media competitors often die out or fall into obscurity. This can be seen with platforms like VidMe, Gorilla Gong, and Mastodon, regardless of the merits of those individual platforms.
