I was browsing the snap store and came across Foobar2000, a music player that quite closely resembles the old, original Winamp. Being an old nerd, I was curious and decided to install the snap; however, the installer is currently stuck at around 24%, which I attribute to the installation of Wine. Regardless of that, I was reminded that every (six months, year, two years?) I inevitably look to the winamp.com website. For YEARS they promised goodness and great things to come, that the company was working hard on bringing it back...so I stuck with it and went back to the website every now and then. I didn't sign up for the mailing list simply because I just didn't want to get more spam.
So, imagine my surprise when I visit the website now; it looks completely different.
Winamp for creators? Subscription service? NFTs?? What is this? Instantly my heart sank. Being a #gemini user, you can imagine - and probably sympathize - about the direction this is going. Honestly, I can't say that all that surprised because in the back of my head I knew it wasn't going to be what I remembered from my youth - a really slim, simple, great music player that had no ads and (assumingly) no trackers. It was official, my favorite music player was going the way of corporate enterprise. There's nothing I can do but mourn over the final ashes of my favorite music player, but alas, there are of course clones and such; however, I was holding out hope that the original (if you can call it that) company would pull through;- but that is now gone.
This only makes me want to stay in the #geminispace even more. I know it's nostalgia at play for me here, but still, I think it's gone past that now because I'm still here over a year later.
RIP Winamp

Hello!
I just saw your post about Winamp in 2023 via Antenna. I used Winamp as my primary media player for almost 15 years, but after switch from Windows to Linux in 2020, I stopped paying attention to the project. The news that it's become yet another NFT money sink is disappointing.
You may have heard of an unofficial project to continue support for the old Winamp called WACUP. I used it for a short time and was pretty satisfied with it, and it still sees to be in development.

Thanks!
