Dealing With Braindeadness

Every once in a while I have a day where I'm just utterly brain-dead. Today's one of those days. I just can't muster up the energy to finish tasks and I get very easily distracted. Over the years I've learned different techniques for powering through those days.

My brain-dead days are very often preceded by a couple of days of poor sleep (almost always self-induced). As a result, I can barely keep my eyes open all day and the urge to nap is overwhelming. However, I've learned that I have to power through and reject all naps. Though I may suffer during the day, staying awake will prevent my braindeadness from spreading into the next day.

The other thing I do on these days is to busy myself with small chores I've been putting off or stopping by the mall or store for something small. What this does for me is it engages my brain in different ways and keeps me more alert. I'll usually use these days as an excuse to stop by a thrift store or shoe store to peruse and maybe pick something up. I find routine often exacerbates whatever is dragging me down.

Finally, the biggest difference maker is probably the most obvious: exercise. If I feel the onset of braindeadness in the morning, I make a point of taking the dog for a longer, brisker walk. Additionally, if I can squeeze in a workout as well that's ideal. Couldn't do that today, but I'll be playing some volleyball tonight with some friends to help get my brain reset and finish off what I couldn't during the day.
