Re: I'm moving to the country

Well, I've recovered from the spider takeover, have dealt with 2 more here and there, but I've coped with that much better than I thought I would. They've definitely slowed a bit for winter, as have the millipedes, scorpions and other bugs!

It's starting to get quite cold here, -1 or -2 C overnight, with +8 to +10 during the day. Our house is not well insulated, and with the fire going full blast, I'm only able to get the temperature up to about 19C during the day, overnight it drops to 12 or 13 in there depending! My current temporary study is not as pleasant though, I'm only able to keep that up to around 14C during the day, makes working a bit of a chore, and I'm definitely getting bored of being cold!

This should be the only winter where we'll be this cold, I'm getting the roof replaced as it's warped and cracked and leaking a bit, and as part of that getting some R7 fibreglass insulation batts installed, that should make a big difference and should (touch wood) be happening some time this month. Double glazed windows won't be here till Summer-ish (December), but I should be in my new office before spring gets going, and that will have a new double glazed door and already has some insulation in the roof, only about R4, but it might be more pleasant!

We have at least got the water filters installed, though that was a bit of a faff too, with the UV filter's quartz tube cracked on delivery. A replacement didn't take too long happily. Water comes out crystal clear and with only a very slight taste. We've also had the two new 22kL tanks placed on their pads, they're getting plumbed in in a couple of weeks, that should solve our water storage problems, and will free up a flat area that we'll be putting a carport on.

Slowly getting fitter with all the firewood schlepping, pine tree clearing (Radiata pine, they're an invasive weed here), heath pulling (another weed) and mountain biking.

Always seems to be something more to fix though! Next project is going to be a firewood storage shed. Will be utilising the roundwood from a number of the felled pines and some old colourbond roof sheets, will be learning roundwood joinery, have looked at Kris Harbour's youtube vids on that, seems to be reasonably logical!

Next week our old house in Canberra goes to auction, it has been magnificently refurbished and looks amazing. Real estate agents are confident we'll get the number we need for us and the refurb company to be happy, so that's something! When that sells, I'll be able to commit to getting our electrical system refreshed in the new house, want to get some cat6 run around, and a PV solar and Battery system, integrated with our electric car charger and with some sort of grid disconnect, but have to wait to see how much we can spend!
