Christina's 5 questions for January 2021

gemini://gemini.circumlunar.space/users/christina/index.gmi

1. This year, did you try reading a book in a genre you usually don't gravitate to? What did you think of it?

Not this year! I've had years where I've tried genre's other than my usual fare of SF and fantasy, but I've just not really got into anything else. I did enjoy some of the Matthew Reilly books, but they they all ended up feeling kind of the same. Similar for the Tom Clancy's stuff, which additionally ended up feeling like a vehicle to show off how much research he did. I did enjoy the Bryce Courtenay stuff, the Power of One and follow ons, and some of the Wilbur Smith stuff about the Ancient Egpytian civilisations, but have doubts of its authenticity now...

This year I've tried to move away from white male American authors. And I have enjoyed just about all the ones I've come across, here's a list of them in no particular order:

* Martha Wells

* Linda Nagata

* Patricia Mackillip

* Genevieve Cogman

* Ci Xin Liu

* Nnedi Okorafor

* Ann Leckie

* Becky Chambers

* Neon Yang

2. Have you ever made a New Year's resolution that you stuck to? (Are you still sticking to it?)

I've never made a new year's resolution. Seems kind of pointless, if I want to change a behaviour or habit, I do it using some sort of tool or reminder system and start on whatever day I come up with it.

3. What does "healthy" mean to you?

Adjective, meaning to have a good state of health, unlikely to become ill.

4. Are you an early bird or a night owl?

I hate getting up earlier than around 0630 and will do a lot of planning to avoid it! But I'm not really able to stay up much past 2300 for more than a day or two in a row. I guess that makes me a night owl?

5. Will you get the COVID vaccine? Why or why not?

Absolutely. I am healthy enough that my risk from taking it is very small making it a civic duty and eliminating the risks to me of a full SARS-COV-2 infection.
