The older I get, the more valuable I realize that time is. Maybe it's part of getting older, this realizing that time is precious and valuable, or maybe that as you get older a lot of us just have less of it and you miss what you don't have. Whatever the case, I find that I now have less personal free time than I've ever had in my life and I long to just spend days here diving into Gemini, coding some projects, and mining for geat gemlogs to read. I don't really have that time anymore so the precious few hours that I can spend here are fun.
I've read some gemlogs of folks that have a family at home - kids and a spouse - and they somehow are able to code up entire servers, develop new protocols, and still hold down a day job. How? When? Do they sleep?
I look back at my early years, and I don't think they were wasted - they got me here and I've spent a lot of time coding and nerding out in my past, but I still long for those long weekends, alone with just me and my computer...only realizing on Sunday night that I hadn't spoken a word outloud for two straight days. It's almost calming to have that much alone time - but then again I was, ironically, lonely. So what is it? Grass is always greener on the other side?
I loved Pink Floyd when I was growing up (no I wasn't alive in their prime), and I always liked their song "Time", but I'm not much of a lyrics person; however, one day quite a few years ago it played on the radio and the lyrics kind of sunk in. It's a pretty deep song when you listen to it and rings truer the older I get.
"Time" Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day Fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town Waiting for someone or something to show you the way Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today And then one day you find ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older Shorter of breath and one day closer to death Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say Home, home again I like to be here when I can When I come home cold and tired It's good to warm my bones beside the fire Far away, across the field The tolling of the iron bell Calls the faithful to their knees To hear the softly spoken magic spell
