We had a team social a few weeks ago -remote, of course-, and one of the proposed activities was to play a few seconds of one of our favourite songs for the rest of the team to guess. It was a fun ice-breaker and turns out we have a very diverse musical taste. We couldn't guess any of the songs.

I struggled to find a favourite song. And it happens as well if you ask me what is my favourite book. I can't even tell if I have a favourite colour.

Of course there are things I like more than others, but in things like music, I tend to be very intense about an album, or a band, and very often a move on and I may not listen to that material for years (if ever).

So it was very awkward for me because I played two songs that I've been enjoying lately ("Acid Spit" by Mega Drive, from 198XAD album; and "Every Little Thing" by The Black keys, from "Let's rock" album), but that may say things about me or my tastes that aren't necessarily true. For example, until I listened to a podcast about the game "Hotline Miami 2", and I started listening to the soundtrack, I had never enjoyed Synthwave (or electronic music for that matter).

I've always been more of a metal-head, so I thought I would play some of the songs that I liked years ago and I can still listen and they are amazing, but say I play "El Phantasmo & The Chicken-run Blast-o-rama", would that mean it is one of my favourite songs? I don't know if I can even say it is one of my favourite White Zombie songs, although it is probably in my top 5.

Anyway, there seems to be some social pressure to have favourites. Some time ago I decided "Hyperion" by Dan Simmons was my favourite book, and I really liked it when I read it (twice), so it is useful to have that out of the way.
