What is The New Hackers Dictionary - Version 4.1.4
(aka - Jargon File 4.1.4)?

This is The Jargon File, the most current updated version available, released
on June 17, 1999 as a comprehensive compendium of hacker slang illuminating many
aspects of hackish tradition, folklore, and humor.

This document (the Jargon File) is in the public domain, to be freely used,
shared, and modified. There are (by intention) no legal restraints on what you
can do with it, but there are traditions about its proper use to which many
hackers are quite strongly attached. Please extend the courtesy of proper
citation when you quote the File, ideally with a version number, as it will
change and grow over time. (Examples of appropriate citation form: "Jargon File
4.1.4").

This document is a collection of slang terms used by various subcultures of
computer hackers. Though some technical material is included for background and
flavor, it is not a technical dictionary; what we describe here is the language
hackers use among themselves for fun, social communication, and technical
debate.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the current surge in program development for the Apple IIgs, by both old
and new people to this computer, seeing some of the unknown abilities of the
IIgs becoming working realities in this period of renewed interest with it, I
thought the time was ripe to take this classic New Hackers Dictionary and make
it available to all Apple IIgs users, as a ProDOS text file, for your use,
humor and reference. Why? Well, so that Apple II and IIgs users, hackers,
programmers and all others in whatever classor way they want to be labeled - might
learn from its content and perhaps even make a friendly link with other hackers,
programmers and such around the world through connecting with them on the Internet
to exchange their thoughts, desires and interest. Doing such things with others
around the world can lead to some great friendships and some productive applications
for the Apple II community needs.

In any event, thats the reason I made the archives and uploaded them - so you
could have and put The New Hackers Dictionary to some useful needs. I hope it
proves to be of interest and value by stimulating something that might
improvement and enhancement the IIgs computer abilities for the needs of their
current and future users - now and in the years to come.

Cheers, Enjoy & Best Wishes,
Tom
