One thing your friend can try is getting a cotton swab and some
alcohol and cleaning the tape heads. This could make a lot of
difference.
As for a replacement, I do not recognize the model number. If the
drive is a SCSI tape drive, your friend might try calling Shreve Systems
(see below). They used to sell Apple SCSI tape drives. (It may help to
have more info on the tapes used-- e.g. a brand and type number.)
No current Apple stuff seller seems to list the drives; but, one of
the following places may have a drive or two sitting around that will
work for your friend:
