Mood: Amused. Paranoid.
Have you guys heard about the whole thing with Netflix falling off? I've been following a lot of the online discussion about it and it's kinda funny.
Like, I think it's pretty easy to track some of the business decisions causing this falloff:
- Disabling screenshots
- Canceling fan favorite shows + renewing shitty ones
- $270 million into Stranger Things newest season
- Losing properties to more proprietary streaming services (i.e. The Office)
- Cancelling animation projects
- Putting ads on the service
- Cracking down on password sharing
The last three I think are a direct response to their stock falling but you can kinda see how that doesn't help things, right... I'm probably just gonna go ahead and cancel my subscription at this point because I use HBO Max more (and it comes free with my internet).
I've seen some people going on Netflix's side saying things like "just because it's 'failing' now doesn't mean it was a loss overall"... which is a weird point to make. You can't seriously be rooting for the corporation, right? I don't think that having Friends on your paid streaming service necessarily changed the world for the better. The few things they really had going for them, they decided to get rid of. I'm mainly referring to the Netflix Originals they choose to continue vs cancel.
I'm a little bit of the belief that the streaming service oversaturation will die down at some point... just not yet. Disney+, I'm sure, will live on, but it sorta makes me think of the on/off Crunchyroll/Funimation partnership and WWE Network merging with Peacock. Not to mention the rumors of AEW being shown on HBO Max as opposed to getting their own thing. I truly don't see this whole trend of new streaming services being sustainable, especially with piracy being such an easy option.
The only reason I still am subscribed to streaming services is mainly because of app availablity on my favorite devices. Now, I own a smart TV and can use Jellyfin or just Chromecast whatever I want onto it. Personally, these days I would just recommend people make their own home media server (either with a NAS or just plugging an external hard drive into a cheap laptop) and pirate everything they want to watch. I might make a guide on pirating stuff on here sometime.
