I'm starting to feel pressured into returning to Facebook for the sake of my IRL friendships. I have a lot of old friends I'd like to reconnect with. Facebook, for us milennials, (at least here in the US) is treated like a near-universal directory for persons, businesses, events, etc. When I want to check the hours of a local bar or restaurant, I often have to ask others to check their Facebook page. I made such a big deal out of leaving Facebook that I'd look like a total ass if I returned. Obviously I would only use it in container tabs and I wouldn't download the phone app... I don't know, though... would this make me a hypocrite, as a FOSShead? I'm feeling very isolated IRL

i dont think the inclusion of any big social media makes you less valid if its in the plight to make connections. if your feelings are genuine then the use of the platform is too. ^_^ use them as safely as you can. your ideals are still true! · 1 year ago

Just keep everything closed source on your phone or on another machine or in a VM. That's what I do. · 1 year ago

I too did make a big fuss about leaving facebook. I dont have any plans to rejoin it but Each and Every college/organization/community share their daily/hourly/monthly routines exclusively on facebook and the websites are just there to be linked to a facebook page. Listening to the seniors, It is very necessary to have a facebook acc because all the notes/notices are distributed via facebook/messanger. What do I do? I dont want to rejoin. But I might have to! So when it's a complete necessity/considering it isn't a bad thing. · 1 year ago

Maybe you guys have such a surplus of friends that you can purity-test them but I am not so lucky · 1 year ago

I don't think you understand what some of us are saying. The fact that you've lost contact is a good indication they are not your friends, or maybe you are not theirs. Friends, in the real meaning of the word, find a way of getting your number to check in that you are OK if they don't hear from you. Why don't they have your phone number? · 1 year ago

Everyone seems to not understand that I'm mostly talking about reconnecting with people with whom I've lost contact. They can't call me if they don't have my phone number, can they? · 1 year ago

Years ago my partner was upset about her 'friends' failing to include her outside of their Facebook chatter. Turned out they were not really friends, outside the Facebook definition. Haven't seen them in a decade, and don't miss them. · 1 year ago

If they are trully your friends you just have to tell them where's your new house and they will visit you. It's a better way to lean who your true friends really are then to fall in trouble and see them ignore you, as usually happens. I would (I did) open an account on mastodon or diaspora and seize the opportunity. · 1 year ago

People are more important than taking a hard line on FOSS. If there's people you feel you need to connect with, don't let Facebook stop you. · 1 year ago

@cobradile94 I'm mainly talking about re-connecting with people I've fallen out of touch with. · 1 year ago

if you feel you need to use it to maintain relationships go for it. if you ever have kids FB is used a lot for planning party’s and even PTA stuff.

consider using this as a learning opportunity not to make such a big dramatic declaration of your decisions. you never know when circumstances change and you have to reconsider your choices · 1 year ago

I just tell my friends to email and text me. None of them have had a problem with that. · 1 year ago
