I'm kind of growing to hate the Fediverse almost as much as I hate corporate social media. I really like the idea, but there's very little choice in what kind of instance you'd like to be a part of. Generally you can pick Mastodon instances with the same Twitter-bluecheck rules on what kind of opinions can be expressed, or some Pleroma instance where you'll likely get harassed by actual nazis. It's fucking ridiculous and I'm growing very disillusioned with this experience.
I just discovered Friendica and honestly, so far I'm liking it way more than Mastodon and Diaspora. Any other capsuleers on the Fediverse?
I've had such a fucking day. I have a somewhat crippling anxiety disorder and I spent all day thinking I was having a heart attack. I threw up when I came home for lunch and skipped the rest of the day at work. Here a little bit ago I took an acetaminophen and a shower and I feel completely better. It was likely a muscle in my back causing all this pain today and I'm so relieved I literally cannot stop laughing.
Gemini shows us how even the *smallest* barrier for entry can keep all the worst parts of the Web out. Gemini isn't hard to access; hell, I'm posting from a smartphone right now, but even the smallest barrier (caring) keeps this space pleasant and interesting (if sometimes a bit quiet). Sometimes gatekeeping is good, it turns out.
You should be wary and cautious of dogmatism, groupthink, and logical fallacy ESPECIALLY when it comes from "your own" side.
I don't know if I mentioned this, but I am now using LineageOS on mobile and it feels __so good__ to have software freedom on all devices I use now. Even my smart TV runs on Kodi, lol.
I'm very happy with the diversity of opinions that can exist here on Station. It very easily could have been a circlejerk echo chamber but isn't. I appreciate that.
Tonight I'm remembering some souls I used to know on the internet. There was a player character in The Lord of the Rings Online I had a very close friendship with, briefly, until she disappeared forever. I think about it frequently.
I'm starting to feel pressured into returning to Facebook for the sake of my IRL friendships. I have a lot of old friends I'd like to reconnect with. Facebook, for us milennials, (at least here in the US) is treated like a near-universal directory for persons, businesses, events, etc. When I want to check the hours of a local bar or restaurant, I often have to ask others to check their Facebook page. I made such a big deal out of leaving Facebook that I'd look like a total ass if I returned. Obviously I would only use it in container tabs and I wouldn't download the phone app... I don't know, though... would this make me a hypocrite, as a FOSShead? I'm feeling very isolated IRL

Does anyone else feel like "geek culture" has been watered down to a ridiculous point in the past decade or so? It's literally just superhero movies and the most mainstream of video games now. Of course, if you complain about this, accusations of 'gatekeeping' get thrown around. I don't think we should keep new people out of interests, but I feel like the "normies" at this point just massively outnumber those of us who were nerds back when it wasn't cool yet. Thoughts?
