Hello Geminispace! I've been quiet this month, mostly as a result of summer vacation. We spent a week upstate doing some backpacking, and it's been bookended by some extra time on either end to decompress and disconnect a bit. The time I have been spending with FunTech^TM has mostly been spent playing around with more advanced features of org-mode. And GUS has been on auto-pilot with an incremental crawl run every morning, with absolutely nothing breaking, for nearly a month. How wonderful. Also, slightly hard to believe our fledgling community is now at almost 200 distinct (sub)domains. The number jumped up a lot due to the addition of flounder.online, and the way it maps each user to a distinct subdomain, but it's still very legitimate growth, as you can see from the corresponding growth in Geminispace page count!

My newest "project," which isn't exactly technological, is practicing mental arithmetic. I saw a post somewhere where someone practiced mental arithmetic for a month or so, and kept track each day of how many problems they could complete in 2 minutes. I'm frankly astonished by how dramatically the number went up, and think it's such a neat, and surprising, example of human brain adaptability. So now I'm determined to recreate the experiment. I'm tracking the results in Gemini, mostly for myself, but it's public in case anyone wants to either follow along or even try it out themselves :P

The weather is beautiful this weekend. Such a nice break from the wave of heat and humidity we've had for the past several weeks. We went for a delightful run in the park yesterday, then played our first game of Brass Birmingham. It's apparently one of the top 5 games of all time on BGG right now, so BF has been wanting to play it. It turned out to be surprisingly unintuitive to learn, but a true joy to play. The game mechanics are creative, unique, complex, and work well thematically, especially with regard to resource consumption as you progress through the eras. And the artwork is wonderful. It's like a dark, broody, grown-up version of Ticket to Ride.
