In 2019, my wife and I visited Walt Disney World in Florida. While I've never been particularly interested in graphic tees or Mickey Mouse ears, we still bought a lot of souvenirs there, including a plain white baseball-style cap with a blue "D" embroidered on the front.
I love the hat, and I enjoy wearing it when I'm outdoors, but the snow-white fabric stains very easily. That doesn't always sit well with me. I'm the type of person who likes when the things I own are either pristine or well-worn, but I have a hard time getting from one point to the other.
Notebooks present a similar problem. I love notebooks and love writing in them, but a pristine notebook is symbolic of an infinite range of possibilities. A blank notebook could be transformed into a planner, a cookbook, a diary, a sketchbook, or any other repository of information. Once that notebook is filled, it's great to look back on how that information came together, and how the scope of the information might have changed over time. But getting there--committing oneself to a path and using up the spotless pages--is often difficult for me to do.
We are currently visiting Walt Disney World again. Shortly before we left, I accidentally dropped the hat on the ground during a rainstorm, and most of the top of the hat got very dirty. I feel less bad about wearing outthe cap now. Sometimes you just need life to give you a push.
