Started to plan out our garden this week. Too early for planting, but not too early for planning, day dreams, and prepping to start some stuff sprouting.
Our soil is pretty bad, so I've been drawing on the forestry and permaculture knowings from a past life -- I'd almost forgotten I spent those 2 years trouping through woods, growing stuff, being terrified of chickens (I'm still terrified of chickens).
I often think about the Hollywood movie scenario of being in a ship wreck or disaster and having the gorgeous lead from the poster ask the rag-tag crew of survivors what they're good at. I would confidently say that I have near limitless knowledge of Stargate, Star Wars, and a handsome understanding of tactics in early Pokemon games.
But I guess I've got more than just that locked in my vault. That said, I've been working to expand my practical skill-set. I grew up going to a fairly practical school, so I feel pretty good about a lot of basic hand crafts -- not so much with anything involving machinery more complicated than a bike. That said, I think a great (as in *large*) myth of survival is that of the "rugged individualist." I'm fairly certain that in reality that person usually doesn't survive very long...eaten by a bear, falls of a cliff, sometimes both. I'm more of a community-focused survivalist, I suppose?
I think that is what throws me for a loop about a lot of the solar punk communities I run across online -- they tend to lean a bit too close to the flames of accelerationism for my liking, and they are often pretty down with the bunker mentality...holing up and going it alone, sailing into the now unknown future on their wits and post-apocalyptic technical know-how.
Nothing incredible planned for this first year. I'm hoping to build some raised beds, and grow some herbs, greens, and some wild native flowers. It'd be fun to plant a few fruit or nut trees, too, but I need to sort out the watering situation.
