The autorifleman is a fire support class dedicated to helping the team achieve fire superiority in engagements.
In NATO factions, the autorifleman will have an M249 or a Minimi, which is a fantastic machine gun which is excellent for suppression and very accurate fire.
The factions with AK74 rifles will have an RPK-74 with a 45 round magazine, which is definitely not as much firepower as the M249. The Middle Eastern Alliance faction uses a FAL with a drum magazine and bipod.
Despite the difference in firepower between NATO / RUS factions, the autorifleman for the Russian other teams perform the same function, which is to establish fire superiority.
I'll take a look at this example from talil outskirts:
Your guys ("o") enemy ("x") in in the rocks fortified airbase } o} ______________ / ^ } |x | } ^ \ | |___| | { o< . . . . . .[x] | | | | ^ } | | | | { o} | |___| | ^ |x_____________|
The objective here should be to suppress the MG nest that is built into the wall of the compound - to allow friendlies to move - either by using smoke from a grenadier to cover the valley, or by rotating to the north.
o making a move ^v% ---> o o . | }_-^/ . | . | | . | . | . V . V } } . ._____________ / ^ } .|x | } ^ \ . |___| | { o< . . . . . .[x] | | | | ^ } | | | | { } | |___| | ^ |x_____________|
Generally, the natural thing to do will be to identify and call out enemies, and shoot at them from a well covered position. Allow your team to maneuver, keep covering them until you can't anymore, then follow them and set up your bipod again.
A rule of thumb is to stay one step behind the squad when attacking, and one step ahead of the squad when defending. If you're attacking an enemy position, continue to provide fire support as long as possible to cover your friendlies while they do their thing. Once things get close quarters, move up with the team. It can help to switch to the M9 if you have an M249.
When the squad is setting up for a defense in a quiet area, it is your cue to move up a bit and find a better spot to be for when the enemy comes.
You want to be somewhere about halfway up a mountain/hill, with good concealment and good *cover* nearby. You want to post up under a big tree, with trees in front of you, and clear view into a valley or creek just beyond the trees. You want to have a large stone nearby, or a hole in the ground - anything where you can move to quickly if you receive return fire.
When the squad is moving up on the enemy compound, the best, as mentioned earlier, is to keep moving but stay one step behind the front of the squad
