there was a drunkard, you remember
my daughter and his thumb - how he pushed his thumb in
just a little, made breath be still, my breath be still
and somehow she survived
yet for that moment no conscious human
suffered better things, and I - I remember his complexion
how each joint separated from the next
and the only thought remaining was this
how best to keep him alive - that he might be a torment
that he might be a message - that my daughter might survive
