I watched this when I was in 7th grade probably, with my cousin Sam and my brother. Watched when it aired and then stuck around for the insufferable aftershow with Chris Hardwick. I've been missing Sam a lot lately, so I started watching the show again.

Just finished season one. Zombie shows are interesting. I think there's a larger point to be made about our cultural fascination with a world full of people who aren't people, who behave like evil animals, a world in a constant state of violence. As an entry-point into a fictional world, you can't ask for a better setup than a man waking from a coma. Our cop protagonist Rick Grimes (good name) awakens and discovers what has become of the world. Something about me is I love a good monster design, and there's some great looking creatures in this show. The legless bike zombie in the first episode is great. The show at large centers around how this apocalyptic world changes people, and the worlds nicest and best cop is a solid choice for a character to illustrate those changes. One thing I hadn't noticed on previous watches is just how often Rick is wrong in the earlier seasons. His kindness and desire to do right is implicitly framed as wrong, and this is highlighted more later as the world hardens him and he is pushed to ruthlessness to survive. This show has a good cast and some great characters. Steven Yeun as Glenn was always my favorite. He contrasts Ricks changes as he maintains his positive outlook and charming demeanor. I never was able to watch the show after he left. Jon Bernthal is hot, he plays Shane, Rick's cop partner, who at the start of the show has told Rick's wife Lori that Rick died and when he returns we get some great love triangle drama.

Lori is played by Sarah Wayne Callies, who I remember from Prison Break. She was a formative tv crush for me, but she doesn't get too much to do in the first season. The season culminates with them making it to the CDC headquarters and the design of that building is so funny to me. The last CDC guy is like "fuck im so depressed and were running out of power, everybody is infected and theres no cure" then he blows himself up.

I got stuff to say on season 2 as I'm watching it now, but I'll save it for later. I will say I thought it was so funny when Carl got shot in the first episode. In the second episode Shane and Rick have some nice unintentional gay dads moments.
