Ricky Gervais vs The Drag Queens

CONTENT WARNING: description of Gervais jokes.

I've heard complaints from certain groups about the wholesomeness of 'drag queens' in such contentious situations as libraries when reading stories to children and (usually) their mums.

Drag acts have always amused me. For my generation, it's Paul O'Grady (Lily Savage) and Steve Coogan (Pauline Calf) who jump to mind. More recently, Rue Paul has brought numerous celebrity drag queens to the fore, one of whom was a contenstant on Celebrity Masterchef (Kitty).

Since the genre originates from nightclubs, with more adult oriented humour, some conservative members of society feel that drag queens are not wholesome enough to be brought in the vacinity of children, and protest events where such things happen.

Yet, for example, Ricky Gervais is the author of numerous childrens books, and he has recorded readings for children. For anyone who has not seen his stand-up shows, they are absolutely _not_ suitable for children, and I haven't heard any of the conservative groups protest about Mr Gervais not being wholesome enough.

Let me present a few examples of Ricky's material (all potentially offensive).

A peurile attack on people with Down's Syndrome:

“Two mongs don’t make a right”.

An edgy shock to our sensibilities:

"I nearly knocked this old woman over," he said, in a patter about drink-driving, "but I didn't. I raped her."

And lastly, a paraphrased summary of a joke pretty much as edgy as it gets:

Jokes about a father of a six year old girl masturbating as she tells him of being molested by a stranger in the play-park. (Chicago, 2019)

The last one was part of a build-up to a final joke, in context it was all kinda funny in an 'OMG!' sort of way.

I don't mean any of this to judge too harshly the humour of Ricky Gervais. I just want to point out the double standards of the wholesomeness warriors.

Would I want my kids watching either Ricky's stand-up or a club night drag act? Not really.

Would I be concerned about my kids being read a story by either? No, of course not.
