A Rare Break

2021-11-11

I am currently a stay at home Dad and my wife travels a lot for work. Needless to say I don't often get a break from watching the kids or to spend much time totally to myself. Well today my wife has the day off and gave me the opportunity to leave the house and go do something I want to do on my own. So I'm riding my ebike around and exploring. Getting a beer and snack here, a coffee and some paglogging there. What is paglogging you ask? That's writing a post for my glog (gemlog) on my Palm PDA of course. Yes, I am that hipster nerd at the coffee shop today and I'm completely unashamed.

My PDA writing rig on the coffee shop patio.

Funny thing happened earlier while I was riding. A kamikaze squirrel came barrelling out of a tree near the bike trail. In the split second that I saw this crazy squirrel start its sprint I could tell that the route it was taking would take it directly across my path. This is a fairly common scenario while riding on the path. Occasionally a squirrel will come running out of a tree near the path but they typically stop in the grass or turn and make a b-line in some other direction before crossing the path. I thought for sure this would be the the most likely result but not this time. This squirrel either had a death wish or was hopped up on fermented acorns or something and ran straight into me as I zipped along at 20 mph. I essentially punted this squirrel about 10 feet as it hit my foot at 20 mph and landed in a daze. After a few seconds the squirrel regained its wits and scurried back into a tree. Luckliy, after decades of cycling and riding a motorbike my nerves are pretty steady so the instinct to swerve and likely crash was successfully repressed. The squirrel got the raw end of that deal.

Next stop, find some good loose leaf tea for our next batch of kombucha. Wish me luck!

Update

I found a tea place and got some loose leaf Golden Monkey and Darjeeling tea, did a little more exploring and headed back home. It was a nice way to spend the afternoon.
