Midnight Pub

The Indian Restaurant at the End of the World

~nsilvestri

I'm drinking remotely for the Midnight tonight, instead writing in from an Indian restaurant in Fairbanks, Alaska. Its two degrees south of the Arctic Circle. There's a mural on the walls that depicts the restaurant as a lone cabin in the Arctic tundra, in the shadow of Denali under the northern lights. Big letters in the corner say "Farthest North Indian Restaurant". I haven't fact checked it, but I think it's reasonably accurate if you're willing to assume it's limited to the United States. Maybe even North America.

But for the extremes that this restaurant lays its claim to fame, what strikes me is how otherwise normal everything is. The food is good and the prices are typical. My coffee was actually cheaper than what I get from my home base in Capital City, USA. But for all other intents and purposes, someone might as well have taken your bog standard medium size midwest city and added some zest of aurora borealis and a sprinkle of Denali obsession. It really makes you think. Or maybe it doesn't. It's not that interesting.

Wish me luck tonight, the aurora has been elusive and the clouds have been plentiful, but I still think my luck can change!

Man we've been getting unbearable heat around these parts (in the middle of February!), much closer to the equator.

Wish you the best of luck with the aurorae!
