yesterday I learned about tildenic. someone a whole back, Maya maybe wrote that Gemini was gated. in a way, adopting tildenic for Gemini would make it a walled garden. and a part of me thinks this would be a great idea, especially since I wouldn't need to pay for tlds

@ser my main reason for bringing this up is because dns is a central members only club. just look at tildenic. the other registrars probably wouldn't allow tildenic to join without paying money, and so I think it's worth going against companies who intentionally gate things. sure a lot of problems could arise, that's a flaw in the system to be tackled · 2 years ago
A couple of weeks ago I drafted a post about a hypothetical .gmi TLD; I didn't post it because, as I was talking it through, I came to the conclusion that a protocol-specific TLD would run counter to the spirit (and needs) of the internet. The one value I can still see in this is as a bootstrap, something to accelerate growth of the gemspace, and there's some precedent in the .gopher TLD. I do think it's worth discussing. · 2 years ago
