AppleWorks 5 has two new important features in the database module:

- it supports the creation of different Single Record Layouts from
multiple Labels-style reports, and

- it supports the addition of background text in both the layouts and
the reports themselves. This background text can be normal, inverse or
MouseText.

Unfortunately, there is a bug in the factory edition of AppleWorks 5
which prevents the saving of a DB file which has more than one
labels-style report containing background text. Any attempt to save
such a file results in the program crashing irretrievably.

I reported this to Randy Brandt, and he came back to me with the
following patch, courtesy of Dan Verkade. This patch has also been
posted to GEnie in the form of a BASIC program.

Using a disk editor, change the following bytes in SEG.AW:

Offset AW 5.0 Should Be
------- ------ ---------
47C6 2D 20
47E6 20 3F
47E7 6F A9 32 8D BA 5C AD AA 77 60
4F30 AD 20 5B 55

You will now be able to save DB files properly with all new features
fully supported. This is the only real bug I have been able to find in
what looks like the cleanest, not to mention the best, version of
AppleWorks ever produced.
