Project Gutenberg gopher service is down. I reported this and received a response that this is due to pygopherd not working on their systems, because it does not support Python version 3 nor version 2.7. "We hope the Gopher server software will be updated in the future, so we can again offer a Gopher service via Project Gutenberg. We do not have an estimated timeline for restoring the service."

there are a few challenges with PG: first is the content has a super long tail. Sherlock Holmes books are downloaded hundreds of thousands of times, and then thousands and thousands of titles are downloaded less than a dozen times. With that access pattern proxying or converting the content on demand could work better than a mirror. they don’t really have an API, so a few third-party projects have built an API. I had thought to build something that grabbed the t1000 most popular books every week and convert them and just serve those · 6 months ago
Project Gutenberg gopher is back online! The URL changed to gopher://gopher.pglaf.org/ · 6 months ago
If i read correctly, the whole of Project Gutenberg takes about 1TB of space. I can't afford to host 1TB of data, but maybe it could be done cooperatively. · 6 months ago
@eph that would be really cool, if a couple of us sent emails seperately requesting for one that might be proof for the gutenberg team that there is interest. It probably wouldn't be too hard for someone with programming skills to make a gemini mirror using their how-to https://www.gutenberg.org/help/mirroring.html · 6 months ago
I don't know but there is a contact page on the web site. · 6 months ago
