If it is a bit repugnant to "normies" or whatever, maybe that's a feature and not a bug. I have a very "you do your thing, I'll do mine", "live and let live" outlook on life; I'm not here to win a popularity contest. · 2 years ago

this is a bit like complaining that the fridge won't fry potatoes - can't see the point of the article - if they don't like the intentional constrains of gemini, they might consider not using it · 2 years ago

I appreciate anti-Gemini posts, because it gives the ecosystem time to develop and prepare for a hypothetical Eternal Gemini September. We may be able to avoid extensive tracking, but "influencers" will surely show up in droves if it hits the mainstream. · 2 years ago

For me one of the main draws of gemini after having used it for a little bit is that you know exactly what you're getting when you're browsing. And being free of the distraction of fiddling with a stylesheet is nice as a writer. As far as inline links go, I'm actually glad we don't have them. They've always kind of felt like poor design to me. · 2 years ago

Each to their own I guess. From the outside looking in I always though Gemini was an admirable effort but one that would never be really any sort of viable alternative. Having been using it, I love several aspects of it now. I actually feel like writing proper content again.

I still don't think it will be competing against HTTP any time soon, but then, that isn't the goal of the project anyway. It can flourish in it's own space, no pun intended. · 2 years ago

As designer I really miss the lack of all the typography variation of a fonts, however HTML/Internet never solved or achieved it because the elegance lies in the proportion and a fluid layout is basically its antithesis.

As non-technical user the point I like the most is exactly the line per line feature, the reduced set of lines, the point that the structure of your document is more or less the same as it is going to be rendered.

Also I love the side effect that a lot of people have bad feelings against this protocol, this auto-repellent effect is highly apprecciated! · 2 years ago

@mc I dunno. dissent should be constructive. but this either doomsaying or the I-told-you-so route, there is not much in the post that can be backed by data or science, yet there are bold claims about growth assumptions and absolutes. this isn't about Gemini defense but the way the arguments are constructed · 2 years ago

I think the dissenting voices are important. · 2 years ago

ironically the critique is available via Gemini, so the author is perhaps adopting a ranting stance whilst at least having a try. Which is something. It seems the main thing he missed is to understand Gemini is intentionally a line based format, due to the very specific benefits and affordances that brings. gemini://gerikson.com/gemlog/gemini-sux/Gemini-misaligned-incentives.gmi · 2 years ago

@aaron would require amassing a following and Solderpunk managed that. ultimately this is just being lazy, letting others do the work, then suggesting stuff, then be bitter when it's rejected and then instead of working with a consensus, you sabotage it. that's modern web culture I guess · 2 years ago

🤷‍ you can always make your own protocol. Or your own client that treats links the way you want. · 2 years ago

I think a bit of tech asceticism is going to be necessary if the goal is to avoid creating systems so complex that one needs a small fortune in funding in order to create alternative implementations. · 2 years ago

Gemini also keeps stealing my sandwiches from the fridge. · 2 years ago

also the connection between developer creativity and further development of the protocol is apparently directly linked to content creation. I don't like html5 either, many others don't like it, none of them go "if they had made it like I wanted...". this is so ridiculous 😔🤷🏻‍♀️ · 2 years ago

👽 maria

oh wow. why are there so many posts about "if they had done it like I wanted, then I would [..]" and now you can think about options. doubt that the content to make gemini popular like they want, would be created by them, so what the hell · 2 years ago
