⛵ A day for sailing and drinking 🍷
Fors was the ancient goddess of fate and luck, and Fortuna, the goddess of good luck and fortune. At some early date, these two Roman deities were worshiped as one: Fors Fortuna. She is honored at midsummer with raucous parties and celebrations. (Bernstein, pg 123)
This day must have been full of ⛵ boating parties and wine 🍷; possibly not a great combination 😉. The temple of Fors Fortuna was located along the Tiber river (Ovid, Fasti 6.771-82), and this was at least one of the rivers where sailing parties were held (Cicero, De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum 5.70).
