i'm currently reading Niels Lyhne, by Jens Peter Jacobsen. Niels is a very romantic guy, in all senses of the word. passions of all kinds swirl within him. he's in love with possibilities, and especially with Fru Boye. also, it's the 1800s.

Jacobsen was heavily recommended in the pages of Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke, which was one of the most inspiring things i've read in quite a long time. a rando writer wrote to Rilke in the early 1900s, asking for advice on how to be a better poet. they traded letters for several years. a lot of Rilke's advice has to do with learning to embrace solitude. embracing solitude and constantly worrying about how to put himself in a position to get on a real creative roll. in the midst of all that, though, he suddenly gets very direct for a paragraph and is like, paraphrasing, "hey young poet, there are only 2 books that matter. i carry them with me everywhere. the bible, and anything by Jens Peter Jacobsen. go to your local library and read Niels Lyhne and also the short story collection."
