There are a lot of good apps for secure messaging (Signal, Matrix, XMPP, Session, Briar, …). I love ModdedBear series on them, but it makes me wonder why 99% of people use Facebook-Meta things.

Matrix is horrible, briar isn't that good when I last used it, and xmpp doesn't have all of the features people need or use. Not sure about signal though. Also, most people are unaware of all of these apps. They are more aware of Instagram and Facebook. And even if they know how bad these companies are, they still have to use them because either they are trapped because it's what all their family and friends uses, or because its only what they know. · 9 months ago

The network effect is strong and most people stick with what they've always used. Where I'm at a lot of people still use GroupMe for some reason even though it's a dead app and works worse than SMS. · 9 months ago

I think because it’s more accessible and has a “real company’s logo” on it, so people trust it more. Most people just want to accomplish their goal, so the path of least resistance is the one they take even if that path spies on them constantly. · 9 months ago
