Don't let anyone convince you your boss or eployer cares about anything but making profits every quarter.

@comatoast That's exactly what it is. As soon as it would save the company a cent to do so, they'll get rid of you. · 2 years ago

@Marginalia: But there's the contradiction no? If they care they wouldn't be in the position in the first place. That sounds more like doing mental gymnasitics to justify having the power to destroy a persons life the second they become a loss rather than an asset. · 2 years ago

I think this is true for companies where the number of employees is greater than, say, 5. Below that and your 'boss' probably knows you very well and does actually care at least somewhat about you! · 2 years ago

I really don't think it's that bad. While on the one hand, the relationship is entirely tansactional (and that goes both ways; I wouldn't show up if I didn't get paid anymore than I would get paid if I didn't show up), there are plenty of bosses that do care about their employees, perhaps not unconditionally like a mother, but still. It's not at all an easy position to be in, since employers (well leaders in a wider sense) absolutely do have to deal with conflicts of interest and difficult ethical dilemmas. · 2 years ago
