Madeleine Albright and the Flattening of history

As you get older, history starts to flatten out. And I had a weird pseudo-revelation about that when I learned about Madeleine Albright's death. You tend to look at the past that came before your own memories in a certain way, and think about the stuff you remember in a different way.

But looking at pictures of her, I was reminded of pictures of politicians in an earlier, pre-me era. Sure, she was the first woman to hold her office, but something about that blue-blood look of her hearkens back to the Nixon era and even beyond for me. So I was able to look at pictures of stuff I remember clearly and see it as kids might see it today. And I had a wild thought about how little things have changed.

Anyway, I was getting really into Crass and that sort of thing when she made the comment about how all the dead Iraqi children were worth it. So that solidified some things for me as a teenager. Thanks, Madame Secretary.
