About
Here we explain and expand on Archipelago I. We recommend reading this section before applying to join our community.
Don't hesitate to communicate any suggestions (or discomfort) for this section. We are interested in working on our sensitivity and inclusiveness for collective well-being and understanding.
You can do so by writing to us at:

Declarations
- We are interested in making this space free of discrimination, violence and harassment for everyone. We do not tolerate any kind of sexism, racism, misogyny, fascism, xenophobia, machismo, (LGBTQIA+)fobia, ableism o ageism.
- We position ourselves against capitalism, globalization imperialism, neoliberalism, despotism, authoritarianism and totalitarianismo. We understand that they sustain the exploitation and oppression of peoples and territories, and perpetuate inhuman and unjust living conditions for all.
- We consider ourselves a non-corporate community. Our goals do not include purely lucrative or corporate objectives. Our objectives are defined from and towards community and collective benefit.
- The content on this domain is licensed under the Peer Production License (copyfarleft). At the same time, we respect the licenses of the contents of each user or group. You can read the license to be informed about it.

Clarifications
- The main invitation of this digital community is for individuals or groups/collectives from Middle America. We understand that this region includes the territories known as Anguilla, Antigua y Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bonaire, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, French Guiana, Haiti, Honduras, Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, US Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Martinique, Mexico, Montserrat, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Martin (both), Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, y Venezuela.
- The invitation is also open to individuals or groups that consider themselves to be diaspora from the territories mentioned above. We also welcome people who do not identify themselves as part of these nation states but as part of communities or territories within the region.
- At the moment we offer two free services exclusively for the community:
- Whoever becomes an island can have their personal page, with the possibility to publish it by https and gemini protocols.
- We have an instance in Pleroma for free use: Mar (Sea) of Archipiélago I.
Mar (Sea)
- We have an XMPP server for instant messaging.
- We offer two public services: a wiki and a radio. We also have some public XMPP rooms.
Públic rooms XMPP
- The username you define will determine how the identifier/subdomain will be assigned for both protocols (https and gemini): `user.archipielago.uno`. In Pleroma you'll be assigned ``@user@mar.archipielago.uno`. Same goes for XMPP.
- Although we write in a 'formal' English, we want everyone to proudly and comfortably express the peculiarities of the region, including english-based creole languages and dialects.
- We recognize that the simplicity of our website may seem strange at a time when people are used to surf a very heavy and ornate web. We find much of today's web to be excessive. In light of this, we are interested in betting on what allows us to navigate the digital world without great computational demands. We adhere to the reflections that point in this direction, including those about Permacomputing and Frugal Computing. Also to projects that take these thoughts into consideration.

- We accept the promotion of commercial services as long as they are in accordance with our principles and interests.
- In these times it's difficult to escape capitalist living conditions. Any donation is considered a great contribution to maintain this community and its services. Contact us if you are interested in making one.
- This community is managed (for now) by ~diez, also known as ~jota.

Community
- Archipiélago I is interested in providing services to the community it pretends to form. We understand that services consolidate a particular content, becoming a reflection of those who form it. We are interested in perceiving, showing and distinguishing the particularity of their identities and contexts, even more so in the cyberworld. We want to host content that makes people reflect on the living conditions, styles, identities, traditions, forms, ways, expressions, languages and dialects of the community.
- The archipelago provides its (few) resources so that the community can define and attend their own interests and needs. We believe it's important to learn to be self-sufficient and independent, and we support any initiative that takes that direction. This includes extending collaborative or cooperative invitations to other communities as well as founding other archipelagos.
- It's possible that this community will be of interest to, and occupied by, people who are computer knowledgeable. Although it's a characteristic in accordance with our principles, we're very interested in having computer inexperienced people to join us. We hope that a lack of experience or knowledge doesn't turn in a reason to discard your interest in us.
- We would like the content of the community to keep in its orbit topics such as Intersectional Feminism, Low-tech, Self-determination, Media-activism and Cyber-activism, among others.
- We understand that there are no limits on the type of content to be published, as long as it doesn't disagree with our statements.
- We use SFTP and SSH to update the content of our site. We also use Lichen, a text editor that you can use in the browser and reflects the content in both https and gemini. We understand that these are convenient options for both people who are familiar with these protocols and people who are not familiar using them.
- In the future we're interested in incorporating to the community: a forum.
- If you identify or find what you have read suitable, and you are interested in joining our community, please send us a short email with an introduction of yourself and your interests/reasons why you would like to join. You can find our email address at the top of this page.
History
- The idea of Archipelago I arose at the end of the year 2021, in a ~diez brainstorm. It ends up materializing (unexpectedly) in the middle of January 2022 with the acquisition of the domain, thanks to the favor of a great person.
- The first thing published in the domain was on January 19, 2022. It had written (in spanish):
Welcome to this space.
Here individuals or collectives are their own islands, and together we form this digital archipelago.
There are active volcanoes, slowly forming territories. When they are finished, you can sail from island to island, exploring the particularity of each one.
Concept
- The concept of the archipelago arose mainly under the influence of the Caribbean. The island lifestyle highlights a particular isolation typical of archipelagos. To equate islands with people is an intuitive thought when one looks closely at the particularities and contexts of those who live there. 'We are an island' is perhaps a common expression in those parts, for better or worse.
Design
- Technical Design
The layout of the home pages is designed for low-tech devices, with lightness and simplicity in mind.
- The archipelago, considering users and https sites, weights around 13MB. archipielago.uno/ weights 414KB in Gemini y 1.3MB in HTTPS. The services (Pleroma, XMPP, Gemini server and HTTPS server) use around 50% of the 1GB shared memory.
- Only uses web-safe colors (HTTPS)
- Only uses HTML and CSS (HTTPS)
- Organizational Design
+ Why islands?
The organization of the content follows the idea behind the classification of islands and archipelagos.
"Depending on the geological origin, the islands that form archipelagos can be considered as oceanic islands or continental islands, and consequently, archipelagos can be oceanic or continental."
In our case we adopted a mixed organization, and therefore we identify ourselves with it.
- Map
Like anyone who navigates (the seas or lands), it's important to have a map.
It's also important to explore and find new islands. There may be unregistered ones too. ;)
Map
- Symbology
The mangrove is the official emblem of Archipelago I.
- It sinks into the ground, takes root and becomes intertwined with others
- It's a pioneer plant. It's the basis for many other plants and animals to establish themselves later
- It tolerate high salinity
- It's abundant in Intertropical America
- Log
Archipiélago I keeps a historic log of its changes.
