4/16/2022 - ofmd and pusha/drake beef

Mood: Content. Headache.

First gemlog post... exciting stuff. Since this capsule is already kind of like my hideaway, I'm going to be keeping some of my more "controversial" thoughts in my gemlog here. Not too controversial, but it's enough that I don't want to share it with anybody I know in particular.

Lately I've been following a lot more stuff going on in rap. A Drake verse got leaked where he was throwing some subliminals at Pusha T. I have no clue what Drake's goal is in this. This is exactly what he did back in 2018, tryna throw some shade a little bit before Pusha's new album comes out. Did he learn nothing from The Story of Adidon?

He's really just poking the hornet's nest when he got stung four years ago.

I also started watching Our Flag Means Death, because I think the guy who plays Blackbeard is kinda handsome. Folks I know have been going crazy over it and have halfway recommended it to me because I seem like the type of guy who would flock to a show about gay pirates. This is half true... I do like pirates. But I don't always take recommendations based on there being LGBT characters, so I was kinda riding it out to see what people said.

And.. okay... let me be honest. Fandom people kinda throw me off and I was feeling uncomfortable with all the white folks talking about how much of a "whore" Blackbeard is. Like you're only calling the brown guy a whore...? Okay... Plus, since I didn't know exactly what the show was about other than "gay pirates", I thought the way people talked about it was dumbing down whatever the actual plot was about.

Uh, I'm not too far in, but I don't think they're that far off.

As it turns out, this show is a historical comedy. I did not know that. Not at all. I was hoping for it to be a serious drama because I dig pirates like that, but oh well. I can't really get on anyone's case for the way they see the characters, because the whole thing is jokes on jokes. Also, I'm already seeing some of the light LGBT themes because one of the (male) characters makes a remark about not liking girls, among a few other miscellaneous comments here and there. I know this isn't queerbait because I've SEEN gifs of some of these guys kissing. I just felt like mentioning it.

I have some complicated feelings on how characters of color are treated in the show but, let's be honest, you can literally chalk it up to the story taking place in 1717. I'm not trying to say they're treated poorly necessarily, it's just... y'know... you can kinda feel that this story was not written by black people. The gay shit is largely normalized amongst the pirates (so far at least) yet there's very little recognition of slavery so far. Some of the black characters are referred to as slaves (by bad guys) but it feels really like... LIGHT. You know what I mean? I'm not sayin' I wanna hear them get called the hard R but they're being very gentle with it.

Normally I stick by my takes like this but I might just be being picky. I looked into it while writing this post and found out Taika Waititi is a director, which may explain why I am not too impressed so far. I've only seen some of his work, with Thor: Ragnarok being the one thing I remember the most. The movie was alright, and that's how I feel about this show. Just alright. I don't expect it to leave a huge impression on me as the show goes on, but I can appreciate the romance being set up and told in this.

Anyway, lemme circle back to the music shit. I've been listening to more Pusha lately 'cuz I've been anticipating a response to Drake's subliminals and I forgot how good Pusha is. The rap game in 2018 was pretty hard too, with alotta emcees I like coming out with some good albums. Earl Sweatshirt finally dropped a new album (and got snubbed for Album of the Year) and a bunch of singles I really liked came out. Plus RTJ released that one song that had a cool ass Rick and Morty music video. It was surprisingly well animated.. not in the regular show's animation style, but it still kept the same art style if that made sense? I kinda wish the actual show was animated like that video was, but I get that it was probably expensive to do.

I digress. I think I might try to put together a playlist of 2018 rap that I enjoyed, because I was listening to a lot more back then. I also wrote a little bit for the first time in a while, which was very refreshing. Maybe all I needed to revitalize my creativity was to just listen to some good ass hip-hop. More to come on that, maybe. I'll probably get to work on that playlist though. I'll probably end up adding a couple things from 2017-2019 in general because I was listening to alot of the same stuff from 2017 back in 2018.

Until next time.
