Dmgif GIF/JPG viewer for DeskMate

Dmgif.pdm, my GIF/JPG viewer for DeskMate, has been almost finished for
quite a while now :-D, but I'm closing in. Everything in the way of
options/features has been implemented; lacking are online help, a DOS
runtime version, and an install program. Lately I've been optimizing
some, trying to match Cshow in speed. JPG is 40% faster, but GIF is still
somewhat slower. Anyway, I've sent the program to 3 people now, and only
one of them has helped me with bug reports. I'd appreciate it if some of
you would check out the program and let me know of any problems you find.
Dmgif lacks the "slide-show" feature of Cshow, but it has a number of
additional features of its own. It has the familiar, easy-to-use DeskMate
interface, including pull-down menus, dialog boxes, and mouse support.
Up to 5 levels of zooming are allowed, with both keyboard and mouse methods.
Panning over the image can likewise be done with either mouse or keyboard.
The image can be dithered or no, and can be rescaled for the display or
mapped pixel-for-pixel. JPG's can be loaded in grayscale (faster, better
looking) or in color, and pictures can be displayed in gray or color (gray
being faster). Pictures can be adjusted for color, even on displays that
lack hardware palette support; in color, red, green, and blue brightness
and saturation can be adjusted, and in gray, brightness and contrast can be.
Your desired defaults are saved in a standard configuration file saved in
the DMCONFIG directory. Installation is easy; all that is required is to
place Dmgif.pdm in the directory where you noional RAM is available, a swap file will
be used; the file will be placed in the directory specified by the TEMP or
TMP environment variable, or, if none, in the root directory of the hard
drive with the most space. In extremis, a second floppy drive could be
used by setting the TEMP or TMP variable, but performance would be poor.
You can configure the amount of swap space, and whether each type of
storage should be used.
Dmgif uses the DeskMate video and print drivers and supports all DeskMate-
supported video modes and print drivers, which in DM 3.05 include CGA,
Hercules, EGA mono, EGA color, VGA, Tandy 1000 640x200x4, Tandy 1000SL/TL/RL
640x200x16, the IBM Graphics Printer, the Epson 24-pin dot matrix printer,
the HP Laserjet, and Tandy printers, such as my DMP132 :-). In Tandy 1000
640x200x4 mode (pre-SL), pictures are by default displayed in 4-color
grayscale, yielding a better picture than available in either CGA mono or
320x200x16 mode; color is available in this mode as an option (but it
doesn't look very good with only 4 colors). Of course, palette adjustment
is available on VGA - and on EGA as well.
Anyway, I hope to hear from some of you that you would like to try my
program and let me know of any problems you encounter. I will email
Dmgif.pdm to whoever requests it. As I said above, I need some testers.
Ken Udut (no longer on Delphi) has been invaluable in pointing out problems,
but he has been the only one. This will eventually be a shareware program,
I think, but not limited or crippled in any way. (I might add support for
some non-DeskMate video modes in the future.)

what I did was turn off switches until I got the combination that worked.
checked everything out and the printer still works. another strange quirk of
Tandy's? :- )
I do remember now that when I ran a program called Snooper on this machine
that it did show the printer using interrupt 7 which should be switch #4,
right? I'm confused <G>
I have a couple of questions maybe you could answer,
1) I've got a Seagate 40 meg that I would like to install in the machine too.
Do you suppose the power supply would handle both drives?
2) also have a PS from an IBM 8088 that seems to handle 2 HDD's just fine and
thought about installing it in the Tandy but it has 2- 6 lead connectors,
using 11 leads and the Tandy has only 9 connectors ( doesn't seem to have a
power good lead ??) do you suppose there's a way to switch these power
supplies? Might be a dumb idea, what are your thoughts?

Most programs, including DOS, don't use the printer interrupt. It will
probably work with DIP switch 4 either on or off, most of the time. I
just wondered why you did it.
The TX can handle 2 *new* 3-1/2" drives with its 67-watt power supply
easily. Old drives like your Seagate draw more power, though, particularly
5-1/4" drives (the power is roughly proportional to the size of the drive).
The question is whether you have enough 12-volt power to spin up both
drives when you turn the computer on; once both are spinning, there's
enough. My TL also has a 67-watt power supply, and maybe it's the same.
The maximum sustained 12-volt supply is 2.4 amps; at 4.8 amps, the
"over current protection" kicks in. You can be over the max (2.4) for
a short period of time at startup. My guess (and it *is* a guess) is
that 2 old drives will work. If you go over the max, though, it might
wear out the power supply over time. I have heard of one person who has
3 (newer) hard drives installed in his TL. I guess (unless someone knows
better) I would say, find out the maximum power draw for both drives,
and if it's less than 2.4 amps, you're OK. 12-volt power is used for
the mechanical parts of the PC: the fan, the floppies, and the hard
drives, but as I say you can go a little over the max at startup, as long
as you stay under once the drives are spinning.
The second question is over my head, but as far as I know it's a matter
of connecting the right wires. Tandy is not *that* incompatible. The
power supply connector has been a problem for some people swapping
motherboards, but some of them must have solved it (though there are
replacement motherboards specially made). If you don't get a good answer
here (share it if you do!), try in comp.sys.tandy.
I'm afraid I go on and only betray my ignorance :-). Today's low-power
components (the 80287-XL uses half the power of the original 80287) mean
that the 67-watt power supplies are more than adequate. The power draw
of a hard drive is proportional to its size: a 5MB full-height 5-1/4"
drive draws far more power than a 540MB 1" 3-1/2" drive. Moreover,
newer drives of the same physical size draw less power than old ones.

computer and nothing happens. I also have a Star nx2430 printer and it works
fine. I took it to Radio Shack and it ran fine off the newer models but
it will not work off mine, tried new cables also but no use maybe someone
can help me here?

Alright, here's on for you.
Recently, I added a hard drive to my PC which comes with its own driver due
to the fact that DOS isn't capable of accessing more than 1024 cylinders on
a hard drive, blah, blah, blah...so the installation manual states and that
for me to fully utilize this hard drive, I should use this software driver.
Now, most everything works as expected except for a couple of programs I
have. They just seem to lock when I attempt to execute them. One program, I
read the docs included with it and it stated that I should use a command line
switch when I start up the program to lower the number of buffers in cases
where the program won't run. I did and now the program runs. When I remove
the driver for the hard drive, I can't access my new drive but the program
will execute from the old setup. The other programs with which I'm having
problems seem to be suffering from the same problem. They'll work without
the driver installed but won't work with the driver installed. I called the
software company that developed the driver and they said to call the hard
drive company for support. I called the hard drive company and explained
what was happening and they insisted that I hadn't installed the programs
correctly and refused to acknowledge that the hard drive driver may be
causing conflicts with certain programs. I've been able to employ work
arounds but the problem still exists. What do you think? :)

Years ago, I put a "hardcard" in my 1000TX, although it wasn't a Tandy
brand. It was a Seagate model, I believe. I, too, thought I needed a setup
program to install the drive but the local Tandy guru stated that the 1000
series has "plug & play" technology (and Microsoft is acting like maybe they
thought of this with Win95) and once the drive is in the PC, the computer
will recognize that it is there. If your PC doesn't recognize that the hard
drive is there, it could be any number of problems. If the drive has never
worked, it's possible you've had a bum drive to begin with but it's a little
late to do anything about it now. Maybe you should check the drives
literature to make sure the jumpers are set correctly. This could cause a
problem too. And I'm sure you've tried other slots to make sure. I don't
know what else to say.

If I heard that a certain disk driver caused a program not to run, I'd
guess that the program was accessing the drive at a low level, perhaps
using undocumented features of DOS that the driver didn't support. This,
though, sounds like a timing problem. Are the programs in question time-
critical (sound/video programs and the like)? What happens if you run
the programs, but don't access the drive? Are you using a memory manager,
such as EMM386?

Hi Jeff -
One of the programs uses command line switches and when I specified less
buffers than the default, it would run. This indicated to me some kind of
memory conflict of some type. The programs that would have the most
problems were those that required large number of files be open
simultaneously. The hard disk driver also seemed to respond to changes I
would make with settings of SMARTDRV.EXE and EMM386.EXE. When I prevent the
driver from loading at IPL, all my programs run fine. There's probably some
kind of configuration error but I got tired of experimenting so I just
configured the new drive in CMOS, ran an FDISK and FORMAT on the new drive
and now I let DOS take care of business and just got rid of the driver that
came with the hard drive. I forgot to say that at one point during my
experimentation, I had my PC reporting about a full meg more of memory than
what I really had.
The driver itself has some kind of BIOS overlay that is suppose to
supplement the "lacking" functions of the regular BIOS so it might be
something in there that triggers the problems I experienced. I just had
never experienced something that contrary before and had gotten thoroughly
disgusted. Live and learn!

I determined the problem originated as a result of using the hard drive
driver included with the hard drive. I finally gave up fighting with it and
just used DOS to configure and drive it. I guess I'll never really know what
the problem was, but at least I got around it. :)

I know how important those jumper settings can be as when I recently
installed my new hard drive, I forgot to change the jumpers on my primary
drive and my system wouldn't recognize that I had an additional drive
install.

Hi Wesley -
Xenix is a variant operating system similar to Unix. Like DOS, Unix became
the overwhelming favorite as an operating system for that type of platform.
You might be hard pressed to find a user of Xenix. :) However, someone using
Unix may be able to put it to use, although I couldn't be 100% certain of
that. How's that for sitting on the fence? :)

Hi Wesley -
Not trying to put a damper on your generousity, but how old is it? If it's
more than 4-5 years old, it's probably out dated with bigger and better
replacements for it now available. Although old components are fun to tinker
with. :)
I don't think I could fully define the exact differences between Unix and
Xenix. Where I work, we have several workstations that are networked
together. One of them runs Xenix and we can communicate with it but due to
some of the differences in commands, some modifications were required. I
guess maybe you could liken it to say comparing MS-DOS, PC-DOS AND DR-DOS.
In a lot of ways they are the same but they each have their own nuances that
might not be totally compatible with the other.

So far, what I think of dmgif, it is a very good program. One thing, I don't
know if it is a bug, or you did it on purpose...when you are displaying a gif
that is like totally black in the background, it puts in white spots, and makes
it a bit lighter than solid black. Same goes with white. Is it supposed to be
that way? Doesn't bother me, in some ways I like it, but wasn't sure if it
was supposed to be that way or not...

I couldn't really say if the card would work on a Unix box. Another thing to
consider is that it may be proprietary equipment that will only work with
that particular type of PC. But if you could find someone willing to try it
out for you, it wouldn't hurt to try.

I did notice this on one of the pictures I have, so I guess you could say
it's intentional, in the sense that I knew about it and decided to ignore
it :-).
It's a consequence of the dithering algorithm; if you turn dithering off,
the black parts are totally black. Floyd-Steinberg dithering propagates
color from the top down all the way to the end. This can be fixed by
making the dither algorithm less "eager," but it makes displaying slower.
We're talking about maybe 15 extra machine cycles per pixel for gray on a
286, triple that for color - so it's not much. I'll check it out some
more, get some timings, but I'll probably take your suggestion. Thanks.
So far I have help for all the menus and menu items, and I'm working on the
dialog boxes. After that, I have to make help for all the error messages.
After that, I have to make an Install.pdm before I have 1.0. So there's
time to make more suggestions, if you have them :-).

You can put a 720k drive in it, removing one of the 360k drives, or you
can install a secondary floppy controller and put a high-density drive in
it.
You can install a new hard drive controller and a bigger hard drive, on a
hardcard if you like that arrangement.
You can install a faster modem, up to 14400, as long as it's internal, or
if external, if you install a faster serial port.
You can upgrade the video to EGA or VGA. You would need an 8-bit video
controller and probably a new monitor, though EGA and VGA cards exist that
can use the CM-11.
You can upgrade the DOS version. The SX will run pretty much any version
of DOS, though there can be problems, so be sure to back up everything
first. It might be a good idea to continue using the original DOS, though,
since it is made especially for the SX and leaves more memory free for
programs than newer versions.
You can install an LIM expanded memory card. This will give programs
designed to use it additional memory to work with; many programs are designed
to use it. You can also use expanded memory as a RAM disk.
You can install a math coprocessor. It can speed up some programs
substantiallyif they use floating-point math.
There are a lot of things you can do with the old girl :-). Make sure that
the expansion cards you get are 8-bit, or if 16-bit, that they can function
in an 8-bit slot. If you get a new hard drive controller, and it uses IRQ,
then you need to be able to set it for IRQ 2, not 5. To install high-density
drives, you need a floppy controller that is able to function as secondary;
an ordinary floppy controller will not work.
If the SX only has the original 384k, you should upgrade the RAM to 640k.
This is very cheap to do.

The TX has Tandy 1000/PC-Jr video, sometimes called TGA. This is a superset
of CGA, and any CGA program will work with it. It has a couple extra video
modes that CGA doesn't have, and these are nice when viewing GIF's.
The TX came with DeskMate. If you like to use it, I encourage you to try
the GIF viewer I just wrote, Dmgif. It can be found in the PC-Compatibles
SIG databases, New Arrivals section.
If DeskMate is not your thing, you can get Cshow. It, too, is in the PC
database. Cshow displays pictures in color at 320x200x16 on the TX, while
Dmgif displays them, by default, in grayscale at 640x200x4 (color is optional).
Dmgif is faster with JPEG's, about the same with GIF's, and doesn't display
some other file types that Cshow can. Dmgif also provides zooming, which
Cshow doesn't, though Cshow has a "slideshow" feature that Dmgif lacks.
(Dmgif's grayscale is clearer than Cshow's color, in my opinion.)
Also in the database, you will find Vuimg. Some people swear by it, though
when I tried it on my TL I wasn't impressed.
Anyway, if you decide you want Cshow because you prefer DOS to DeskMate,
I hope you will try the DOS version of Dmgif when I get it done in a few
weeks. Actually, there is a DOS version now, but it would be a little
awkward to install without the install program I have yet to write. Oh,
yes, Dmgif offers color adjustment on the TX, which Cshow does not, and
you can print with Dmgif, but you can only print with the registered version
of Cshow. The next version of Dmgif will have online help, though the one
in the database does not; Cshow has online help.

thanks for response. There are gif viewers, but the results are less than
what you would expect for the time and trouble involved. Ill keep searching
and let the forum know if I find a good one. However, do you have
windows???. I have a 1000tx and my memory does not seem sufficient for

That (the dithering thing) was the only thing I noticed...and in a way I
kind of like it. Is there any way you can make it an option to either have or
not have it that way? In case it makes any difference, I am running EGA@
640x350x16. I like the program, in some was better than Vuimg (prog I used
before) and in some ways I don't like it better. I would imagine it has taken
a lot of work to get completed. Let me know if I could help you out in any way.

I ran windows 3.0 for a while but it was slow compaired to deskmate and geos,
also windows can only be used in standard mode on the tx. There is a company
called EverGreen (I think) that makes a chipset that makes the tx into a 486
I've heard that this will alow it to run windows in protected mode. Probably
no matter what you do to the tx it will always be a slow windows performer
because of the motherboard. For my uses, the tx and deskmate is a perfect
match.

Um ... if you changed your mind about the dithering, it's too late now.
I already changed it :-). It affected mainly pictures that were *almost*,
but not quite, black. I'm glad it works on EGA as that's something I can't
personally test. The dither change only reduced the display speed by about
1.5%, which is difficult to measure.
It was a lot of work, but it is winding down. The help file is all done.
It still needs to be compressed (this needs to be done by hand), and then
the Install program needs to be written.
I have some questions about running DeskMate 3.03 on large disk partitions
(> 32 meg). The DOS version uses a 3.03 runtime, you see, so I need to
find out how it deals with big hard drives. If itT1000/1200/3000

Wesf, I've heard of the 4 port card. I didn't know Xenix was used on models
other than the 16 and 6000. I have a model 6000 running Xenix and that card
you have might just work in my system.

I am in need of one. Preferably 35 meg or larger. Must be 8 heads, 1024 cyl.
unless you have a 2010 controller. Either HD unit or complete external case
would be okay.

Yep, Dmgif 0.9 requires DeskMate 3. As far as I know, Tandy never let
anybody else but them write programs for DeskMate 2, and 2 is incompatible
with 3.
I can send you Dmgif 1.0, which runs under DOS. The DOS version uses a
DeskMate 3 runtime and DeskMate 3 print drivers, video drivers, help, etc.
You can copy to the clipboard with it, but without another DM 3 program
there's no point in it. The DOS version of Dmgif has a goodly amount of
online help about DeskMate 3, as well as being an example - though the
applications that come with DM 3 are not as big or complicated. There's no
install program yet, so I would have to write you instructions. Basically,
the DOS version of Dmgif needs to be in its own directory and be in the
path; the pictures can be wherever you want them.
If DeskMate 2 ran in text mode (I know some early versions of DeskMate
did), I can understand your confusion about how it would work with a .gif
viewer. DeskMate 3 runs in graphics mode. If you decide you would like to
get DM 3, try calling 1-800-THE-SHACK and asking for DeskMate 3.05, catalog
number 25-1351.

I rmember theh good 'ol days in thhe beginning of CoCo. RS sales people
were "forbidden" to speak of third party. Same with TRISDOS, etc. I
called it the "head in the sand" policy (sound much better then what the
head was<g> up). I talked with programmers who wrote print drivers. "You
must write ONE FOR EACH RS PINTER, then one for every one else". Typical
of their standardization. It's been debatible,, whether they just want to
have an item work on ONE COMPUTER ONLY, or just got a deal on weird
connectors, etc. that no one else wanted, (because no one else used).
Actually I think it's a little of both.

In addition to upgrading to VGA on my old 1000TX, the best thing I added
was an expanded memory board and 2Mb of memory. I used it primarily for
two RAMdisks: one small one to hold a copy of the command processor along
with all my batch files to launch various apps, and another larger one
for miscellaneous uses such as editing large files, etc. And, I used a
portion of the expanded memory for a discache.
I have stayed with Tandy DOS 3.21. An upgrade to DOS 3.3 might have been
useful, but I never felt the need strongly enough to actually get around to
doing it.
About a year ago I bought a '486DX2/66 machine, but my daughter uses the
old 1000TX at her college. She's perfectly happy with it and its
ancient 2400 baud modem.

Oh well... Yes, it runs just fine on EGA. Are the colors supposed to be
different and messed up looking (menus and such, GIFs look just fine)? The
colors are different...if you change the default colors or whatever in one
of the menus, it will put the deskmate colors back to normal...
As for your testing with partitions greater than 32 megs...I have a 35 and a
40 meg drive, both in partitions with DOS 6.2. I did a little cheat with a
runtime version of Deskmate that I got with PC Link, as I don't have a copy of
Deskmate that I could put on my 3000HD (Was using Deskmate on my 1000SL in ROM)
A quick check reveals that it is runtime version 3.05. Does this help any?

I have the Tandy 3000HD system....apparently this system was used as a server
for several other systems. I think that 4 com port card was used to link the
other computers to this one. Would you be interested in that card if you think
it will work?
As for the hard drive you are looking for, I have an MFM that came in this 3000
that is 5 heads, 989 cylinders...running on a WD-1003-WA2 controller card. I
might be willing to part with that drive once I find a replacement if it will
work for you...and I can in no way guarantee how long it will work as it has
this nice constant high-pitched whine to it...

The colors are supposed to be different, yes. As the docs explain, I need
a nice, known set of colors to dither. You can use the DeskMate default
colors, but you can't dither then. The colors are changed back when Dmgif
exits. Unfortunately, there is no way to change colors for GIF's but
leave the menus the same. How do they seem "messed up," though?
I don't think 3.05 has trouble with large partitions. I guess I'll have to
find a way to check that myself.

Hmmm...I just don't understand it. They must have different kinds of Radio
Shacks west of the Blue Ridge. I've never seem to have the problems that
your small, vocal group seems to have had.
Back in the days of TRSDOS, the OS market was still up for grabs and
Microsoft won out only because it was backed by IBM's muscle and the fact
that they (IBM) got ticked off with Digital Research or we may be using CPM
right now instead of DOS.
True, Tandy's equipment was proprietary but I've never had an instance where
I could only use a particular printer with a particular PC model. I have a
DMP-105 that I've used on a Model IV, 1000TX and have tested it on my 2100
and it has performed as expected every time. I have a DMP-132 that I've used
with my 1000TX and 2100 and haven't had any problems. I think the only thing
that Tandy may be guilty of is attempting a little innovation to try and set
their PCs apart from the crowd. But your crowd won't have to worry about
that anymore because Tandy now sells ASTs and Packard Bells.

Yes, Dmgif changes the screen colors. That's not all that radical, really.
First Publisher for DeskMate, when it runs on a Tandy 1000 with original
video, changes the video mode to CGA, which not only changes the colors
but makes everything mono. First Publisher is a well-admired program for
DeskMate. A DeskMate program is compliant with the DeskMate standard as
long as it changes the screen colors back to the default when it's done.
Dmgif changes them back when it exits, when you task switch, or when you run
the Setup accessory.
I've thought some, and there isn't a perfectly safe way for you to try the
DOS version. I think it's fine, but I'm not absolutely sure, and I don't
want to mess up anyone's hard drive. I have to find some way to check it
more. If you would, though, I'd like you to check out the online help.
It would be safe, but it would only work on your 3000HD, not on the SL (the
SL needs a special installation for help to work). Help and DOS version
require that certain checks be made before installation, hence the install
program. When you add those two, bad things can happen if you don't install
it right.

BtW: the monitor I used is a Magnavox 135,, (replaced theh 515), either

And you're right,,, Tandy learned people were tiring of buying their
propriatory line. It's an expensive lesson for the buyer. But we learn.
My real gripe is Tandy had a real oppertunity to put out some great
products. Matter of fact except for thh odd ball, effect of leaving
sole support, with one company (theirs) the guts of some of their
systems was good. Propriatism,, however never let it go much beyond that.

I run DESKMATE 3.05 on a Hyundai 286 and a 107meg harddrive with an EGA and
DOS 6.22. I really like the DMGIF program. Is there a DESKMATE programmers
kit?
DMGIF runs the same speed as 2SHOW on my machine, but I like the DESKMATE
interface since I use it all day, every day, to keep my customer contacts
etc.

It sounds to me like your only experience with Tandys was a CoCo and your
trying to group everything Tandy has ever made into the same class as a
CoCo. If I recall correctly, the CoCo was a highly specific and "uniquely"
designed PC and I don't believe it was ever Tandy's intention that this PC
(hardware & software) be compatible with anything else. I'm sure if you
bought a CoCo, there was a specific monitor, printer etc... that you had to
buy with it, not to mention the fact that it was based on a Motorola chip, I
believe.
On an analytical note: What is the motivation of those individuals that
don't like Tandys, to persistantly seek out those that do use Tandys and
find it necessary to bare witness to their own perceived dissatisfication?
Maybe it's because they are envious of those who can find enjoyment,
productivity and use of their Tandys, wondering what they must be doing
wrong.

Thank you. I ought to clarify that I've been talking about the DOS version
of Dmgif *1.0*, which nobody has but me. There's no problem with 0.9,
which is the version in the Delphi database. I'm going to set 1.0 aside
for now.

version 3.03 is TEM-0004. (3.05 is the last and best, but I don't know the

However to set a few things straight,, the CoCo isn't nor ever was any
kind of PC. It uses Microsoft Basic,, but there compatibility ends. In
it's day,, it was thhe best computer for the buck. But this was due to 3rd
party, ENTIRELY. Without 3rd party,, it'ud been a notch under a Vic-20.

PCM Magazine is, sadly, dead. I don't remember who started the string, but
I'll take your word for it.

It is exactly so with later Tandy's such as the 1000-series. Tandy likes
to say, "It can't be done," when what they really mean is, "We don't sell
it."

Actually, the models I/II/III/IV/4D are classics now, sought by collectors.
But perhaps that proves your point.

Unfortunately, that remains Tandy's attitude, for the most part. Perhaps
more so now that they don't make computers any more and have no need to
cultivate their user base.

Come on, now, *everybody* made nonstandard printers in those days, and for
that matter, everybody makes them now. Printing has *never* been
standardized, completely, beyond the simple printing of the ASCII alphabet.

Good for you. But, then, buying an IBM would have made a 3rd-party buyer
out of you too, what with the prices IBM was charging for parts in the
80's.

If you have some software for the CoCo, there are a lot of CoCo owners out
there would like to have it. You can upload it to this ftp site:

Put it in the /pub/submissions directory. From Delphi, you can upload
uuencoded files (the site maintainer knows about Delphi's problems and
uudecodes files he gets from here). Uuencode the file in one part to make
it easy for him. Use .uue for the file extension to make it plain.
Compress it if CoCo people have some file compression they usually use.
Look at us Tandy owners as you look at Jaguar owners. Jaguars are a pain
to own - they break down all the time. Tandy's never break down (your CoCo
is still running), but they give their owners endless compatibility
headaches. But we like our old Tandy's, as you like your CoCo, perhaps
because of their many quirks, because of the fascination in finding them
out and sharing them. Don't flame us any more - as the proud owner of a
CoCo, you're in no position. You're one of us.

Hi Jeff,
My appoligies, if I seemed to be ragging on Tandy users. My
problem really is with Radio Shacks method of marketing. As for
the machines and their users,,, it does seem (as you point out),
that we are of the same blood. I've watched the marketing of
the CoCo both third party and RS for some years. And it is an
anomily. What was hard for many to understand is Radio Shack is
an electronics store. Not a computer store. While some were
dissapointed, Radio Shack didn't cater closer to the computer
user,, I realized they also had speakers, HAM equipemnt,, and a
wide variety of other items to sell. (and try to know something
about). That I understand,, it's the head in the sand (idf we
don't make it,, it don't exist) policy that always ticked me.
What was laughable was their secrecy from their own sales
force. We knew about new products, prices,, etc. before they
did. I'd go in and kiddingly ask if they received the new ----
yet? They'd first respond seriously asking, then reply,,,
"well, you guys seem to get the information, before we do,, and
who knows? I thought you were serious".
Perhaps it is that Tandy's like CoCo's weren't for everyone.
"Everyone" (back then) goes to K-Mart, or Target, to buy their
home hobby computer. Whereas "we" went to a technical oriented
store. We are the seekers, the tinkers, the hackers, and the CoCo
was not for those of the beaten path,, it was made for us.
My software? I did make a full working version Shareware,, but
have never liked it on a BBS for downloads. Principally because
the various programs in the PAC comprise 97K of code, plus TXT
Doc's. It's all interrelated,, and one clitch,, and the 97K
becomes near worthless. And too, once downloaded from a pay
service,, and you have bought it, in a sence; considering the
size. Two bucks will get a disk mailed to anyone who wants it.
But allow me to gloat a bit,, as I tell you several PC compat
friends who had used it said, "nothing on the PC handled their
home books so quickly and simply". Not that it compares,, but
that was before Quicken.. Figure it like this,, it was written
by a guy who hates bookwork and loves programming. Using defualts
and macros,, at every turn possible,, the computer will make the
entry for you. And our in ROM Basic runs at speed comforable to
your 8 MHZ machines. Yup,, I converted enough to test it. It
beat the britches off the 1000. So at our local RS computer
center we ran a race. On a simple screen refresh,, my 1.8 MHZ
(yeah we tweek 'em too) ran even neck with the then new 8 MHZ
Tandy SL. Oh,, I knew I could get a basic complier or used quick
basic, etc. But I figured why do I need to buy the software to
make a computer do what mine already will do? And stayed with the
CoCo.
BTW: I did get a chance to know Lonnie somewhat,, and wondered,
do you know what Falsoft is doing these days?

ZPDA a.k.a. "Zoomer" Help

Have a ZPDA trying to get into DOS (past icons) to play. Speaking of play-
ing.... moved some files but can't figure out where they got moved to!
Also ... been to several RS stores and called tech support any news on when
fax technology will equal/bypass the ad dept. hype?
