First hike of the year, and other updates
It's, again, been a few weeks since I've written, so another flight log is in order. Fewer interesting things than last time, but here's everything anyway :)
Short updates and thoughts
- I got a new job! More details to come after I start (March 14th), but it's for a nonprofit with a mission I can actually believe in, doing DevOps work. I'm really excited for the opportunity and am looking forward to writing more about this and the role that I'm stepping away from (subject to confidentiality agreements and all, obviously).
- Related, I'm picking up more side work and it's about to become an actual business rather than a fun hobby, so I'm going through the process of getting a city business license. More on this in a later post, I think.
- My todo lists are getting more and more cluttered, so I'm thinking about task management tooling again. I use Taskwarrior in my current job, and it at least lets me keep track of what needs to be done, so I'm going to try to apply it to my home / contracting task lists too. Currently I keep my side projects in a "scratchpad.gmi" file, which is nice for quickly capturing ideas, but it's becoming big enough that it needs more structure.

- I got a standing desk for home. It's been nice so far but it also makes me realize I really need to invest in my workstation setup significantly more than I have. (For context, my daily driver is a ThinkPad T430, which I usually use without external monitors on a tiny desk. It's a great device but I'm starting to hit the limits of a single 1600x900 monitor. I'll probably write another post about this in more detail later.)
First hike of the year
I got to go on a hike last weekend, for the first time in a while! Two main takeaways: I am out of shape, but it's not worse than I expected -- and I need to go outside more :)
I hiked at one of my favorite preserves in the city, covering 25 miles of trail over 1100 acres on Monte Sano mountain.

I took some pictures to share, but not many of them came out well. The two that did are below; if you like this sort of thing, watch this space (well, not this space, but my flight log), as I do intend to publish more good photos from past hikes soon.

Neat pond made out of a cool rock formation, almost dry but not quite
Tips for figuring out what makes a good picture (while still on the mountain) are appreciated :) I usually take these with my phone, so it's hard to get a good sense of what looks good and is actually interesting.
