LIMERICK danced to the sound of 20 marching bands yesterday afternoon
at the 51st annual International Band Championships.
Thousands of people braved heavy downpours for the spectacle, which
brought the curtain down on this year’s St Patrick’s festivities in
Limerick.
And they were rewarded as more than 1,000 performers provided a
spectacular musical backdrop.
There were celebrations for the Pride of Bixby Marching Band from
Oklahoma in the USA. They landed the overall title, impressing the
judges by performing a rendition of Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson.

Elsewhere, there were awards for a number of other bands including the
Burlington Teen Tour Band who came from Canada, Grand View High School
who jetted across from Colorado, the Friendship Band from Northern
Ireland and Maghery Band Academy from Co Donegal.
Six bands flew the flag for Limerick: Redemptorist Centre of Music
Concert Band, CBS Pipe Band, City of Limerick Pipe Band, St Mary's Fife
and Drum Band, Newcastle West and District Band and Boherbuoy Brass and
Reed Band from Lord Edward Street in the city.
Metropolitan district leader, Cllr Olivia O’Sullivan said: “It’s great.
The bands are very impressive. You have to hand it to them, when they
are out there, and the weather isn’t with them. They are giving it
socks!”
