I find this sort of thing happening routinely. I suspect everyone else feels more comfortable with waiting for the meaning of a sentence to emerge later.
Whatever happened to saying 'one', as short for 'someone'?
It sounds pretentious to most people, but obviously that comes from history, and not from any problems with the word's use. Germans, and presumably others retain a separate, short word, to express what the relevant people do.
We have different words for big and small things we use to cover our heads - 'cap' and 'hat'. When saying 'look at that American cap', one might expect the immediate correction of 'hat - that is a cowboy hat, not a cap'. We can all keep track of a myriad of tiny distinctions just like that, but apparently we can't tell the difference between the person we're speaking with, and general people.
