On Again ... Off Again

Climate Action?

Perhaps I'm getting a bit crazy, or perhaps a bit desparate. Though I'm definitely a fish out of water when it comes to social media I've taken to sloganeering on Mastodon in an effort to influence somebody, anybody who might scroll by. Will it make any difference? I believe the answer is "yes", if enough people care and begin speaking out.

Yesterday's first post:

πŸ›‘ Stop polluting the air that I must breathe by operating
your motorized vehicles! Please.

"Burning fossil fuels harms others" -- Peter Kalmus

Big oil is too powerful? Stop buying gas from them.

Now I'll have to develop and refine a collection of bumper sticker / elevator pitch / sound bite slogans -- oh yeah, this is the internet and here they call stuff like this "memes". And I'll have to be somewhat consistent in posting them. Posting here is like putting a sign in my front yard, folks who happen to wander down our out-of-the-way street might notice it when they're in the neighborhood. Posting on Mastodon is more like passing out leaflets at the mall or plaza downtown or other places with crowds of people.

What Can I Say?

As I've watched the climate change, almost imperceptibly at first, and recently like a roller-coaster car having just come over the highest peak on its track, I've wondered what I'll say to my grandchildren and great-grandchildren when they ask about it.

When I started to write about it, I realized it would be more than a brief blog post, so it ended on a separate page:

I'm Sorry

What's Your Plan?

I am convinced that climate change is happening faster than many of us thought that it would. I am also convinced that the ultimate result of these changes will be a smaller human population on the earth who are all living simpler lives (using less energy and technological inputs than is common to our current Western lifestyles). This change of life-ways might well be described as "degrowth".

If you're not yet familiar with "degrowth" these web links can help:

Text-heavy pages for those who want detail

More visual or modern web pages

Videos for folks who prefer that format

More videos

While degrowth is often viewed as an economic process to be managed politically, I want to focus on the pragmatic issues on a small scale. What do I, as an individual making decisions about my own life and household, do to prepare for the coming changes?

A few weeks ago I began working out the answer to that question. So far I've got a small collection of links that relate to the ideas I'm working on, intermingled with an outline and a few paragraphs describing my thoughts so far. It is not a polished, well thought out, publishable essay. The page is still being edited, but I want to use it as a tool for discussions that we're having in our family. As we -- honestly, mostly I -- work through that process the page will be updated to better reflect our understanding and our planning.

My degrowth planning working document
