Profit above all else

Our society actively promotes profit as the principal goal in life, placing it above all else. This isn't only morally wrong, but produces a society without empathy or regards for the surrounding world.

The obsession surrounding profit can rightly be traced to the current economic system. Yet, I don't want to get into a theoretical stand point, I want to focus on the impact, the result, this primary focus has had on people's lives around the world.

Here children are taught in the economics class that "as an adult, profit should be valued above anything else." This is disastrous from multiple sides, as the future adults will be less empathetic, if they have any at all, and will think of their relationship as transactions, as means for an end, in this case their monetary gains.

The predominant values of our era are the values of the ruling class, but at the cost of our humanity. When people lack empathy, they cannot comprehend each other anymore, the ability to do so being absent. People that cannot understand their peers are divided, unable to create any movement on a small or large scale. Though, this is more than that. It makes us "economic entities working for their own gain", stripping us of what makes us human. It places money above all else, which doesn't take a genius to see how much harm it has been doing us for the past 400 years.

This idea, profit above all else, makes people ruthless, ready to take a jab at one another for a promotion, a higher salary, or any other financial benefits. Instead of teaching understanding to the next generations, they preach money, consumerism and other disgusting characteristics of this society. Although schools are not the only culprit, as the commodification of every part of human life has been quite successfully achieved, consumerism and profit-above-all-else is promoted on all mass media, normalizing a destructive and harmful mentality.

Worse, this detaches us from others, and in this mental disassociation horrors such as wars are produced, all in the name of the master of the current world, profit. Before, people did crimes in the name of some god, now they do crimes in the name of profit. Society's obsession with money, is closely interconnected with consumerism, another disease of the current society, which in turn is wrecking havoc by allowing things such as the climate catastrophe to happen.
