I'm not exactly sure how to phrase what I'm talking about so I'll try my best to elaborate. Essentially, I'm trying to reduce the number of times I pull my phone out to look at the screen. As I dug deeper into my phone use habits, I found I use the clock and alarm functions on my phone a lot. I've been a watch-wearer for most of my life, but I am now more inclined to use it more functionally rather than as an accessory.
There was a blog post a while back where someone was talking about the Casio F-91W and how great it was even now in the era of the wearable. I bought myself one almost immediately and have been wearing it daily ever since. With this watch I've changed my habits enough that I consistently look at my wrist to check the time instead of my phone when my phone is not already out. Additionally, because it has alarm and stopwatch functionality as well, I've made great use of it over my phone when I need it for cooking and other tasks.
I've also started using an alarm clock again. I've turned off all my phone's morning alarms (of which there were about 8), and now use an old alarm clock I had lying around. I was initially worried the single alarm and quieter buzzer wouldn't wake me, but so far it's worked perfectly well. Not reaching for my phone and looking at a glowing screen first thing in the morning can only beneficial and so far my day-to-day life experience hasn't been altered for the worst.
I'm hoping to continue digging into more of the subtle hooks my smartphone has deployed and releasing them one by one. In the meantime I'm going to stick to my "smart" watch and alarm clock to keep me on time.
