Iran and Saudi Arabia agree to re-establish diplomatic relations, seven years after they were severed.

Bilateral relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia have been strained over several geopolitical issues such as aspirations for regional leadership, oil export policy and relations with the United States and other Western countries. Diplomatic relations were suspended from 1987–1990 and for seven years after the execution of Nimr al-Nimr and the 2016 attack on the Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran. However, in March 2023, after discussions brokered by China, Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to reestablish relations.

The International Criminal Court issues arrest warrants for Russian president Vladimir Putin  and Russian official Maria Lvova-Belova for the abduction of children from Ukraine.

During the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russia forcibly transferred thousands of Ukrainian children to areas it controls, granted them Russian citizenship and forcibly adopted them into Russian families and created obstacles for their reunification with their parents or homeland.

On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded and occupied parts of Ukraine in a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War, which began in 2014. The invasion has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths on both sides and instigated Europe's largest refugee crisis since World War II. About 8 million Ukrainians were displaced within their country by June, and more than 8.1 million had fled the country by March 2023.
