One of the players in my #boatmode group likes to build characters and figure out how to “optimize” etc and I do see the appeal of that. What makes it even more fun is that we have so many houserules and place such an emphasis on the logistics game that online “guides” are pretty much useless. And our nerfs aren’t just limited to “what upstream probably intended if there were no broken stuff”. No, I’ve also buffed classes that were already among the strongest classes, like clerics. It changes the social landscape of the setting.

(People maybe have heard the following before but two awesome, 80/20 nerfs are:

When I first introduced this nerf, players stopped taking Light for a while, not wanting to waste a whole cantrip slot on something they could, for the same amount of money and inventory, just as easily use lanterns for. But after a year or so they wizened up to the awesomeness of it working under water or when holding a weapon in each hand + the diegetic awesomeness of using magical illumination.)

A holocaust-denying anti-vaxxer won in court vs SVT (Swedish state television) for using candid camera in their investigation of her. I don’t necessarily disagree with that court decision; surveillance is not a direction I want society to head in.

The problem is with SVT’s subsequent reporting on the court decision; she’s being refered to as a “mere” anti-vaxxer eliding her antisemitic, inciteful lies.

My fave Donald Duck artists are Barks, Vicar, and Cavazzano.

I’m doing a Don Rosa reread now. I’ve accepted that I’m never gonna make up my mind about him. He has some strange, unsettling, spooky appeal, like Will Elder. My favorit Don Rosa episode is the one with the big bowl in the ocean.

PSA:

I declare the following to be the canonical generalization of “snake eyes” and “boxcars” on die sizes other than six and die amounts larger than two:

Snake eyes: all ones.

Boxcars: all sixes (even when there are bigger numbers on the dice). (Not possible on d5 or smaller dice.)

I definitely hate the ends in these specific cases—awful GQP policies overriding good dem policies. That’s a no-brainer as y’all know the GQP is wack. But that’s a separate question. đŸ€·đŸ»â€â™€ïž

Ceramic frying pans are a scam. I need to get to cast iron. I really don’t wanna have to learn everything about caring for them properly but I guess I have to, by process of elimination.

Bonus kitchen tip:

One of the biggest electricity hogs in your house is if you have a touch control stove top, even if it’s induction. Hard knobs save juice. Get an external breaker for your stove and save power.

In #boatmode session 226 I used a math web site (their brandname elided) to figure out how many medium items can fit in a portable hole (3202 medium items) and it “helpfully” suggested that that’s the volume of 0.45 typical gray whales đŸ’đŸ»â€â™€ïž

Weird how there isn’t a plain vanilla Unicode smart quotes Unix text filter on Debian as far as I know. This is what I have resorted to for now, as “crossing the river to get water” as this contraption is:

smartypants () {        # Using Gruber's SmartyPants.pl        /home/sandra/skami/pl/SmartyPants_1.5.1/SmartyPants.pl | perl -MHTML::Entities -pe 'decode_entities $_' 2> /dev/null}

The XMPP nerds have started calling OMEMO “oldmemo” in favor of the new version which they call “twomemo”. Ho hum it was like pulling teeth to get on OMEMO and it’s already being obsoleted?!

I’ve been so anti setex-headers in Markdown (and RST) because they only work on monospace while I was using proportional, so atx headers made a lot more sense.

But it struck me the other day that I’ve been stuck on monospace for a year and a half (since I’m working over mosh) and setex-headers look amazing in Fira Code and markdown-cycle still works fine in Emacs’ markdown-mode.

Golang has become pretty rough on installing forks. I ran into the same frustrations as these peeps:

proposal: cmd/go: allow “go install” a forked repository with cmd · Issue #50278 · golang/go · GitHub

Maybe is also going to have ramifications on my branch of The Unsinkable Molly Brownâ€ŠđŸ€” I used go get to install that but that no longer works.

What an un-thought-through design decision. Even if you like centralization & hate forks, how are we going to be able to send patches if we can’t install & test our changes locally?

Yay! Bitlbee supports messages that are more than one line! (I should’ve looked this up years ago.) The interface is pretty sweet and integrates well with rcirc’s multiline support. (Not sure whether you need to prepend every line with the nick addressing, but that only matters in the “grouped” window, not if you’re not in a query.)

Monstress wouldn’t‘ve worked in any other medium than comics. It wouldn’t have worked as prose text since there are no words for the trippy assault on the senses it barrages the audience with. It wouldn’t‘ve worked on cinema or on TV since you need to flip back and forth to even have a slight chance of following along with what’s going on.

I was wrong when dissing the “ligature heavy” monospace fonts like Fira Code. It seemed like such a bad idea when I first saw it but I’ve been using it for a year and a half now and it’s so often been helpful and good and made things clearer, and faster to understand. Fira Code is great. ♄

I still miss proportional fonts (only reason I use monospace now is because I’m writing over mosh).

Seems to me that the SRD might need to rely on kinda clunky “forward compatibility” bolts to One D&D:

The Kyle Brink interviews: D&D, WotC, One D&D and the OGL - YouTube

That outcome isn’t great if it does happen
for One D&D, because that means I’d wanna stick to mostly 5e. Now, some of the house rules I use are already not open source because I’ve lifted stuff (for personal table use) from e.g. Sine Nomine games and from non-D&D games. (For example, I use the “socialite challenges” table from Silent Legions.) And maybe I’d wanna lift the occasional house rule from One D&D similarly. But it looks to be a messy mess and maybe it’s time for a reset like when I finally after over 20 years rewrote my .emacs to an .emacs.d with straight.el.
