browser extensions that help me a lot
Over the years I've gathered some nice browser extensions to help manage browsing the web. They kind of deserve to be written down somewhere and maybe someone else finds use for them.
- uBlock Origin: self explanatory; an ad blocker. I especially love the element picker and the custom rules and lists one can download or make yourself. I don't log in to my Tumblr much anymore these days, but I hide quite a lot of content through the element picker and I recently entered www.tumblr.com##div.KTRcB:nth-of-type(4) in my filters to also filter out the new shop icon.
- PrivacyBadger: Blocking Trackers.
- Decentraleyes: blocks connections to major CDNs such as Cloudflare and Google (for privacy and anti-tracking purposes) and serves popular web libraries (such as JQuery and AngularJS) locally on the user’s machine. This makes usage faster too, and uses less data.
- SponsorBlock: Important for YouTube. Crowdsources video segment times so you can choose to autoskip and other options. In my case, this autoskips paid promotion such as those shitty Squarespace promotions or the annoying engagement reminders. If I see a video first and no one has sent in any times, I can easily send some in and save someone else the time. Other options include the video summaries some channels choose to show in the first minute of the video before the main content starts, end cards, the thank you list to the Patreon subscribers etc. I see none of all that stuff and it's great.
- Tranquility!: Makes a site easier to read by removing a lot of design elements and making it minimalistic. Especially nice for news websites and other articles. Like the Reader in Safari on the iPhone.
- Dark Mode: Self explanatory. Light and darkmode for all websites. Looks bad on some/isn't optimized for all, but mostly works.
- XKit Rewritten: Must have for Tumblr users because of the different settings in regards to ad content, No Recommended, Quick Reblog, blocking specific posts, Quick Tags, Timestamps on posts, and several accessibility options.
- Bionic Reader: If you have issues reading big texts because your eyes skip over words unintentionally or you lose the line, bionic reading might be for you. I very recently installed it and while it doesn't work 100% on all words and sentences, it works enough to help. You have to first open the extension, go to the ALL tab and click APPLY, for each website you use.
- ClearURLs: Removes tracking elements from URLs you copy to send to others. Usually, the URL contains where you got it from (visible when the URL has something containing 'twitter' etc. towards the end) or even info about your account (like that time when sending someone a TikTok link also revealed your account to them). This also shortens URLs by a lot, which is nice.
- Consent-O-Matic: Automatic handling of GDPR consent forms on websites (the cookie popup). Automatically denies, doesn't agree. It doesn't work as well as "I don't care about cookies" (had that one previously), but that one was sold to AVAST and I don't like that. It does work pretty well for YouTube and Google, might have trouble with different languages than English, but you can report difficulties and they're improving it.
- Cookie-AutoDelete: Does what it says. When a tab closes, any cookies not being used are automatically deleted. You can set exceptions.
- Don't accept image/webp: Great extension so you don't get these weird image formats when downloading content and get the usual image types like jpg and png instead.
- LibRedirect: Redirects links for several websites like Twitter or TikTok to more privacy minded front-ends. I think it is worth including here because I do use it a lot when opening links sent to me, but to be honest it isn't that reliable. Lots of instances of Teddit, Libreddit, Nitter etc are down and Bibliogram (for Instagram) doesn't work anymore. I do hope it improves in the future. I like it because it enables me to check content the sites usually lock behind an account creation reminder screen and other annoyances.
- Shinigami Eyes: Highlights explicitly trans-friendly and transphobic people. Useful in interacting with people in discussions and some sources.
