Did I miss the boat on the gemini fad? It seems really slow everywhere. Where's the good energy?

Slow community, but I like it. · 1 year ago
@wolftivy You're welcome :) Yeah, agreed – if we see growth because more cool projects appear, and more people want in on the fun, awesome. · 1 year ago
FWIW, the Station is great @martin. Thanks for hosting us. I understand the reluctance on growth for its own sake. That said, Gemini is cool enough that I want to see much more of what can be done with it. · 1 year ago
For my own part, I created Station because I thought it could become a little hub of activity (one of many) here on Gemini, and I'm unconcerned whether it grows or shrinks at this point. It'll be here while people find it a useful place to hang out, and gone the second it is no more. Obviously a critical mass is required both for Station and in general for Gemini, but I think growth for gowth's sake would be a shame to see. I really like the slow, small internet vibe we currently have. 🙌 · 1 year ago
Thanks for the stats post @moddedbear and @smokey. That helps! · 1 year ago
Heres a capsule that generates graphs of the raw gemini statistics. Hopefully it can help you understand the scale and scope of the gemini protocol in a more solid and intuitive way. You will see that gemini is very much alive and healthy gemini://botond.online/en/stats/ · 1 year ago
Well, fwiw, the Yesterweb, which is a community of people focused on creating personal websites and bringing the web back to the 1.0 days, just made a Gemini server, and quite a few members have already joined, (Including myself, switching hosts for my Capsule). gemini://cities.yesterweb.org/ · 1 year ago
@lykso I hope gemini does become popular, precisely because the protocol is designed to resist the bullshit that has befallen http. It's not going to be a little clique forever, and that's a good thing. It either dies or grows up. And I think it has the potential to grow up gracefully and result in something with a better spirit, so I'm excited to find where the growth is. · 1 year ago
Here's an interesting page with historical gemini statistics

Meanwhile, in gopher... :) · 1 year ago
As others have said, yeah it's slow. Of course the design of Gemini and the philosophies of a lot of the people here are part of the reason for it. It's too early to tell if it's a fad or not, but I can tell you in my year of being here it's exploded in size. Capsules like station and antenna have only been around a short while, and the number of capsules overall has tripled in the past year (I'll try to find the source for this if you're interested).
Things are slow but still very much trending upward. · 1 year ago
@wofltivy I think you've touched a nerve here. There's a lot of fear that Gemini *will* become popular and that popularity will bring with it the capitalist bullshit that's ruined the Web. I'm not personally afraid of this, because I think Gemini just isn't what most people want. I could be wrong, of course. · 1 year ago
Point is, it's _supposed_ to be slow. You don't get the instant feedback you might get in the fat web, but you know someone is reading your content because Gemini is so small that people are constantly browsing through pages and following links (at least that's what I usually do). · 1 year ago
@wolftivy Go back to reddit. This place isn't a centralized platform. It's more akin to the internet prior to 2001. There is no "assesment of growth" There is no board meeting and investments on the next quarter. You just don't know what you are talking about and it just comes off as really arrogant and pompous. How HTTP works isn't how this place works. · 1 year ago
@lykso that is good to hear. This is a good center of activity.
Stay mad @comatoast. I am promoting gemini, actually. I'm here because I believe in it as a superior protocol, and everyone I know is coming to hear about it. But I'm curious from those who have been around for longer, what the intuitive assesment is of growth and prospects. If that question gets painful emotional reactions and blaming the asker, the prognosis must not be very good. · 1 year ago
@wolftivy What do you expect? If you aren't promoting gemini then of course it will die out. Things like this are sustained through word of mouth. It's just very pompous of you to come here acting like you deserve to raep the reward with out any of the benifit. If you want the community to grow help it grow, but, you aren't helping anything by acting like that. · 1 year ago
As someone who's not even been here a year, it feels like Station at least has gotten busier since I joined. 🤷 · 1 year ago
@lykso it is still growing though? Are we happy with the prospects of the protocol and space? It is unfortunately easy for these things to die prematurely if they don't hit some kind of self-sustaining critical mass. · 1 year ago
It's too early to say it's not a fad. I really hope it isn't, because I love the concept. But I poke the wound to see whether it's infected. Yeah it's only a couple years old, but usually there is a core of sustaining activity that is building the thing up. Seems like there's a lot that could be done and I'm curious who might do it and where they hang out. · 1 year ago
Gemini isn't a fad. It's a community and it's only a few years old. If you want instant gratification for everything you say and do this probably isn't the place for you. · 1 year ago
It's generally just pretty slow on Gemini. Small community, relative to larger places. · 1 year ago
