Edward Snowden Day

I recently attended a seminar about the decolonization of our minds. One

of the topics discussed was holidays and how we blindly celebrate or

observe holidays and traditions based off lies, war, co-opting other

peoples religious beliefs/cultures and all sorts of questionable

origins. I’m not saying its a bad thing to partake in thanksgiving

dinner with your loved ones, but simply to acknowledge that certain

themes woven into the holiday should be tossed to the wayside.

I’m currently writing this on Black Friday 2020 after a long hike in the

woods, Last year my family and I decided to go for a hike on this day,

because the forest trails would be peaceful and empty, also, the exact

opposite of what Black Friday represents to us. We decided to make the

Black Friday hike a yearly tradition. A holiday just for us. Away from

the mindless consumer culture and commercial advertising. This blooming

new “holiday” has been such a success that I’ve decided to coin a new

holiday in honor of one of my heroes. June 6th will be forever known to

me, and hopefully others as Snowden Day. Marking the anniversary of June

6th, 2013 when Edward Snowden came public and released information to

the world about the American government spying on its own people.

I suggest you make some holidays for yourself as well. Whatever you

stand for and whatever people have inspired you deserve to be

celebrated.
