I'm an amateur magician. In my office at work, I have a couple books about card
magic and mathematical magic tricks. Recently, a student saw these, noticed
that I am interested in magic, and told me that he is an amateur hypnotist.
This got us started on an exchange of books and ideas about these two rather
fringe-y hobbies.
The student lent me his copy of Hypnotism Without Trance, and I have thoroughly
enjoyed reading it. I don't think I'm ever going to try out hypnotism, but I
think that the ideas in the book pair well with performing magic and teaching.
The book was originally written as an introduction to "street hypnotism" or
impromptu hypnotism carried out informally. The book has a lot to say against
covert or under-the-radar hypnotism. It is also explicitly against "trance"
in hypnotism.
