to the tamaracks and pines

i think just last week

i bought this old dress

but it's faded and it's stained

and it's tearing at the seams.

and i know that i'm

getting older all the time

but the days fly by too fast

like a fading autumn dream

you held me in your arms

under the cotton sky

and we apologized

and to the tamaracks and pines

for the tears that we shed

and the blood that we bled

for the hands that we held

and the homes that we fled
