I recently came across these instructions for building a “moss microbial fuel cell”, which are based on the findings published by Bombelli and colleagues in 2016. Skimming the latter, it looks like the researchers were iterating on previously documented technology (plant microbial fuel cells; MFCs), and their real innovation was the novel “anodic matrix” they tested (which isn’t part of the simple Instructables build).
Moss is amazing stuff. I highly recommend Gathering Mossby Robin Wall Kimmerer (who’s best known for her other book, Braiding Sweetgrass) if you need to be convinced that mosses are awesome plants. I wanted to build a moss garden already, and the idea of experimenting with fuel cells and moss gardens at the same time is pretty appealing.
The how-to seems fairly simple, you just stack up the following layers (from the bottom-up):
