I've had digital cameras for about 20 years, and I've taken more than 1,000 pictures a year.
I didn't want to get tied to any particular software, so (eventually) I made my own gallery page for them: a bit of HTML/CSS and a lot of JS. Then I auto-generated a page for every day when I took pictures. Then, as a background occasional task, I went through them, just showing the reasonable ones, captioning them, and doing any other tidy-ups that seemed necessary. That took about 4 years of occasion-ality.
I also wrote a script that finds pictures captioned with a particular name or word, and makes a temporary page just of those. Then it was easy to pick a random word, which gets me strange but pleasing juxtapositions. The word "ready" finds a kids' Christmas performance, some people decorating a marquee, a statue, and a church interior just before a wedding. Or "day" gets me some old work colleagues, a wine bottle, and someone applying sum cream to his face. And the only "Steven" is a mouse that was found at the end of a camping trip under a tent.
