Creative Commons (and FOSS) is not market capitalism in the literal sense. It’s neither priced according to buy/sell markets nor is it concentrating ownership of means of production.

Super satisfied with the 5.1 D&D CC-BY 4.0.

Doomsday averted. I got what I wanted. D&D is saved. Movie and such unboycotted as far as I’m concerned.

I wanna extend a huge thanks to all who kvetched, whined, boycotted, yelled, raged—we did it. ♄

Even people who advocate for peeling a banana from the opposite end refer to it as “from the opposite end” or “upside-down” or “backwards”, no matter how fiercely they express that advocacy and how strongly they condemn peeling a banana normally.

I’m a player in another DM’s campaign and a fellow party member is played same player whose character got killed by a dragon back in #boatmode session 218. And that character killed my character in the other campaign đŸ€ŠđŸ»â€â™€ïž

ML-generated stuff has a lot of problems and it makes me feel really bad, but I am not overly fond of the copyright argument against it.

Even so, I disagree with this counterargument to the copyright argument:

Can robot brains break laws human brains can't?

As of the moment we, legally and technologically speaking, do not consider Artificial Intelligence to be equivalent to Natural Intelligence.

Yeah, I hope that never ever happens. Tools are not people.

I was bragging* at a party a few weeks ago about how I easily beat Baba Is You but what I didn’t realize until today is that there was an update that added a ton more levels including user-contributed leves! I vaguely remember hearing about this years ago, now that I think of it, but that was when I was in a “the Switch is in storage” phase and it passed me by.

I get how me leading any political or psychological or consumer or economic issue straight to climate change can seem ridiculous and feel like the 2023 equivalent of Godwin’s Law but it really is the foundational issue of our time 💔

Before we fix it or ensure that we’re on the path to fixing it, everything else is secondary.

A lot of tropes about women in comics are about women being reduced to shallow, cutout caricatures, only there for being rescued or worried or w/e.

It’s a mistake to think of fridging (which means when a character, like a girlfriend or a child, dies so the hero can feel dark anguish) as one of these tropes. I’ve seen comics creators defend themselves from fridging saying “it’s not fridging, she was a developed character who had years of publication history.”

You mean like a lot of the early and most well-known fridging examples were? Fridging is usually done with the most beloved, long-running, multidimensional side characters because that hits harder. That’s no less of a problem.

Regex vs BNF-style grammar parsing was such a hot topic back in the day but I’ve found that a li’l bit of regex can be a great shortcut when used as a complement to other approaches to parsing; the regexes can be used in the lexing step or on parsed-out tokens.

There is this narrative among small email operators that there’s a conspiracy among the big providers to block you. I don’t know whether that’s true or not but often the smaller operators I hear this from don’t have DKIM and DMARC set up.

“Deutsch dismissed the idea that many-worlds is an “interpretation”, saying that to call it an interpretation “is like talking about dinosaurs as an ‘interpretation’ of fossil records.”"

Except that fossil records has experimental and experiental evidence (as in: we can see dino bones in museums) whereas the ψ state vector’s wave function has not been experimentally shown to be an objective, observable property. đŸ€·đŸ»â€â™€ïž

A li’l 3PK (three of four chars died) in #boatmode session 218 as they went up against a green dragon.

I used a li’l technique I stole from Mikael Bergström: a time gap to deal with shocking, mindblowing events.

Owain (PC): “We go up close to the tower”

DM: “Suddenly you wake up, and on the ground below you see the bloody remains of the other party members. Below you? Yes. That ground covered by a gigantic shadow that becomes smaller and smaller as the dragon holding you is rising, and claws start tearing you limb from limb, what do you do?”

(Followed by my innovation on Bergström’s technique: we then actually rolled out the fight 100% fairly and openly, from the start—one of the three people on the ground ended up waking up (and running away), while the guy in the air did get shredded.)

It’s so shocking to me that S1E13 of the 1999 fiction show Action depicts the horrors of the Weinstein brothers (referred to as the “Rothstein” brothers), (even though the episode was pulled and not aired until 2014, which is still three years before MeToo). People knew back in 1999 but he was still not in jail. That’s in and of itself part of the horror.

WotC re-apologized and released a new draft.

The good news is that the corest of the core is gonna be CC-BY (according to the current draft). That is wonderful news. Yes and yes. Thank you Wizards of the Coast! ♄♄♄♄♄

The not-so-good news is that the not-so-core (for example classes) is gonna be OGL 1.2, which is less bad than the previous proposals but is still not a DFSF-free license (for example, it still fails the desert island test).

The bad news is the deauthorization which is confusing and odd.

“This means that you may not use that version of the OGL, or any prior version, to publish SRD content after (effective date). It does not mean that any content previously published under that version needs to update to this license. Any previously published content remains licensed under whichever version of the OGL was in effect when you published that content.”

In other words, the 5e SRD is becoming non-free—but that doesn’t apply to republishings of (direct text copies of) the 5e SRD, like open5e?!?!!? ¡¿Que?!

Party I usually* vote for (V) hired an antisemite for a thing:

VÀnsterpartist bakom antisemitisk förelÀsare tillbaka i lokalpolitiken  | Expo.se

And their counter argument is straight out of federalism basics (“it’s that local small rural commune’s local decision”) is chafing right up to one of the big Q’s I’ve been wrestling with for a few years without finding good answers: “To what extent should we have local decisions a la anarchofederalism and to what extent are human rights universal?” and I’m slowly slipping towards the latter, towards the “some questions are bigger than just a small town”. Specifically climate change but also stuff like this.

I know for sure that if it were SD, I wouldn’t‘ve been like “JÅ is still fine because this was just a local decision”. Never. Every bad and rotten thing that happens in that party of evil is a blight on the entire party. But doesn’t that also say something about how we should organize our own party?
